Dropping JDK 1.1 support

We've started discussing on ant-dev at what point we could drop support for
JDK 1.1 in Ant. Steve has suggested that we should ask the user community for
opinions. I think that is a good idea so here goes.

Currently the Ant core and many of the core tasks are required to compile
under JDK 1.1. Optional tasks are able to require more modern JDK versions.
We are thinking about moving the core up to requiring JDK 1.2. It has the
advantage of allowing us to use JDK 1.2 facilities without resorting to
reflection and artificial interfaces, etc..

The options would be

1. Mark the Ant 1.5.x releases as the last JDK 1.1 compatible release. IOW,
Ant 1.6 would require JDK 1.2

2. Mark 1.6 as the last JDK 1.1 release. This would give more notice of the
change

3. Stick to JDK 1.1 support for now.

Please feel free to express your views.

Thanks
Conor

Well, 1.3.1 is widely deployed in commercial production environments.

I think 1.2 is the correct choice. Anything above could create problems
to some users.

It seems that the only system in the above list which would be affected
by a shift to JDK 1.2 would be MacOS. As long as Ant 1.5.x continues to
be supported (only for bug fixes, obviously) I don't see any problem.

Waiting for Ant 2 could be a long wait. Is version 1.6 the last planned
1.x version?

I agree, but Conor's message didn't include this option.

It's disheartening to see that so many people in the Java community
have this "if I'm not using it, no-one is" attitude.

MacOS only supports 1.1, and will never see anything newer. The free
VM's (Kaffe, SableVM, etc) do not support all the 1.4 features, MacOS X
just got 1.4.1 a couple days ago. OS/2 has 1.3.1, OS/390 has 1.3.1,
Linux on pSeries (RS/6000) has 1.3.1, Linux on 31 bit zSeries has 1.3.1.

My votes:
+1 on making 1.6 the last release to support 1.1
+1 on making the next release (Ant 2) require 1.2
-1 on making the requirement anything above 1.2
-1 on making 1.5.x the last release to support 1.1

I agree with moving forward to more recent JDK support.
But I'm not too clear on your proposal :
You point 1) says 1.6 requires JDK 1.2, but then your
point 2) says it's the last 1.1 release?
So will 1.6 work need/work/require 1.1 or not?
IOW it would make more sense if your penultimate point reads :
"2) Mark 1.5.x as the last JDK1.1 release."

One more thing to note, many of the embedded Java developers will still
be using 1.1, perhaps someone in this community can send a few messages
to those communities asking their opinions.

Thanks

Little besides the gross inconvenience of requiring the purchase
and maintenance of systems in the network solely for the purpose
of supporting the build mechanism. I seriously can't imagine
convincing any management I've worked for that a development
support tool was a worthwhile adoption even though it required
its own unique computer system(s).

Re: Dropping JDK 1.1 support

There seems to be a lot of support for moving straight to 1.3 (or even 1.4).
Might I suggest that as Ant is *mainly* used to build stuff, as opposed to
*running* it, then the JDK compatibility issue is even less important.

For example, I know that a lot of people are stuck with application servers
that don't yet support JDK 1.4 (or platforms upon which a JDK 1.4 isn't even
available yet), and others are in companies that wait a long time before
upgrading technology... but there's little to prevent them building with Ant
on a newer platform, then deploying on the older platform. Java compilers
are in any case full of backward-compatibility options, and paranoid folks
can compile against older versions of "rt.jar" if need be.

In any case, those that require JDK 1.1 compatibility or whatever, can still
use the existing versions of Ant, which are damned good anyway. If they
can't update their JDK, it's often safe to assume that they probably won't
be keen on updating Ant or their build scripts to get their hands on the
latest and greatest features of the next version of Ant (that probably would
be of little use anyway on their older environment)...

Quite frankly, I think that JDK 1.3, or even 1.4, offer so many more
features, that it might be worth making an even bigger jump to either 1.3
(or 1.4). I favour 1.4, because (as I said), people who use Ant already in
an older environment can stick to their existing version if it works well
enough.

By moving to a more recent version of the JDK, you can avoid all the
reflection/interface "hacks" you mentioned (in Conor's original mail),
making for cleaner faster code, and as any programmer knows, the simpler the
code, the easier it is to test and make reliable... Furthermore, given the
number of bundled APIs, the Ant software could be made much more compact.

So, I think the best option, is to offer (either on this mailing list or on
the Ant website), a vote in the following form:

With which versions of the Java platform should future versions of Ant
(1.6+) be compatible ?

 [ ] JDK 1.4
 [ ] JDK 1.3
 [ ] JDK 1.2
 [ ] JDK 1.1 (current compatibility level)

Hope this helps,
Chris

Personnaly, I'd move the minimum requirment up to 1.3, but not to 1.4.

3. Stick to JDK 1.1 support for now.

We continue to use 1.1.8 for support of clients with older platforms (233mHz
and below) and OS like win3.x (hey, it's good money and there are a lot of
customers!). ANT is really not essential since the 1.x Java environment was
mostly applets (very little swing) and there is little or no need for ANT
supporting tools as we see it since JSP, ASP, etc. are not necessary in
these instances! We do find that the compile in 1.4.x with the target set
to 1.1 does not always give one the desired/expected results. We do like
the very SMALL footprint of 1.1.x since the swing is optional and there are
NO client required downloads AND old browsers work, too!

1. Mark the Ant 1.5.x releases as the last JDK 1.1 compatible release. IOW,
Ant 1.6 would require JDK 1.2

It would seem silly not to begin the transition; however, for the sake of
the developers and the implementers and the users do take the small steps
that allow everyone, especially those with small programming staffs, the
time to make the change gracefully! I like the #2 choice much better since
there will be a large number of users that will miss the wake-up call
announcing the change (time, budget, staff) and the #2 choice gives them
just a little more time!

2. Mark 1.6 as the last JDK 1.1 release. This would give more notice of the
change

+1; minimum requirement JDK 1.2 (though that has begun EOL)

One could always use a archived "latest stable release for 1.1";
assuming this would remain available

One of the reasons we lag with ant and versions is it is so foundational to
so many projects. We dont want to screw up somebodys project just because we
dont run on their version. Open source is better than closed source in this
respect; if 1.1 users want to continue maintaining the last 1.1 branch,
we'll let them :)

And it is not like we require java1.2, only that we wont require anything
newer. So you can use the latest version you and your platform du jour is
happy with.

One thing it a move to 1.2 effectively means is that we stop running on MS
virtual machines, of the J++ or the J# variety. You can still build with
<jvc> if you want, but not run ant. Clearly nobody cares about that, which
can only be a good thing :)

Hello,

I've read through most all the posts and have these thoughts ...

First, it should be clarified what dropping 1.1 support means. Here's
my understanding of that:

Ant will require a 1.2 or 1.3.1 JVM (whatever is decided) to be build
and run all core functionality and core tasks. However projects
requiring to be built under 1.1 can still support 1.1 by using -target
1.1 or by specifying the appropriate options to <javac> so a 1.1
classes.zip is used.

It should be recommended that optional tasks also support the same base
JVM version supported by the core but this would be up to the task's author.

>
> The options would be
>
> 1. Mark the Ant 1.5.x releases as the last JDK 1.1 compatible release. IOW,

+1. As it has been pointed out by others, the most benefit would be
gained supporting 1.2 as the minimum version as some OS's lag behind the
mainstream 1.3.1 and 1.4. Maybe 1.3.1 could be required, but the
additional benefits are few over 1.2. It's too early to require 1.4 as
it's still not available on some OS's.

> 2. Mark 1.6 as the last JDK 1.1 release. This would give more notice of the
> change

-1. Not really. When 1.5.3 ships it could be clearly noted that the
1.5.x series is the last to support 1.1 JVM's at runtime. Version 1.6
would require 1.2 or whatever is decided.

Also, with many new features slated for 1.6, such as import and embed,
etc., requiring 1.1 support for these new features is going to
complicate the implementation and support of those features. Relaxing
the restriction to 1.2+ would simplify many aspects of implementing
these features and allow 1.6 to ship earlier :) .

The 1.5.x series can be maintained for bugfixes, etc. However, there
are some people chomping at the bit to get new optional tasks released.
Could there be a 1.5.3a release that just updates the optional tasks
or better yet, could there be a separate release for optional tasks alone?

Who still uses JDK1.1? Not me. Well, I suppose someone still does, but I
wouldn't care if you required JDK1.3 as the minimum. Heck, I wouldn't care
if 1.4 was the minimum, but JDK1.3 is probably prudent.

+1 for Ant-1.6 to require JDK1.2

If Ant requires a more recent JVM, I still think it's important to be able
to target a particular older version of the Java API. 1.1 compatibility
should be obtainable at least by using Jikes and pointing it to
"classes.zip" or "rt.jar".

I suggested (as others did to) J2SE 1.4... in my case, I suggested it as it
has many useful APIs compared with older versions (I find that the JDK 1.4
release provides significant new features compared with other releases ; 1.3
didn't bring in much new stuff). Things like regexp, JCE/JAAS, built-in
logging, that are available externally, but by using built-in stuff, Ant
download becomes smaller and Ant core code doesn't need to make so many
"what-if" cases to be compatible with external software and manage so many
dependencies.

For those that are happy with current release, they can keep it. It won't

Re: Dropping JDK 1.1 support

As long as building with a 1.1 target is well supported, I'm +1 on dropping
1.1 as a requirement for a build or execution of Ant itself.

In my last several jobs, providing Application Service Provider model
software to corporations, I've had to deliver applets running in the
default IE 4/5 JVM, no plugins.

Ant has to maintain the ability to build targeting a 1.1 environment, and
as was mentioned in another email, the ability to use a 1.1 'javac' for
compilation is really handy, too.
