fop hanging

We have run FOP successfully for some time now. Every so often though, with no obvious reason it will hang for days & not return until I kill it. There is nothing I can see wrong with the files being processed, as when I process it again it works fine. Both debug logs below, no errors.

Does anyone have any suggestions? eg where to start or other things to try?
fop 0.20.5, command line + BC encryption, jre1.3.1_01, RH linux
