[DISCUSS] Discuss Release Apache FlexJS 0.6.0 RC1

This is the discussion thread.

Thanks,

Thanks for the clarifications :)

I believe it might be good idea to use standard jar file locations
(like maven repo) and standard way of integration, and reduce
dependendency on people.a.o :)

Way back when I first did this, 0.8 was what I had on my system, and I
didn't want to find out if the output format might change in newer
versions. The Ant script does some string replacement on the output to
try to make it easier to find binary files in the package.

But I just made the switch to 0.11 and it seems ok.

Hello Alex,

just curious, why are you using
http://people.apache.org/~aharui/rat/apache-rat-0.8.jar
instead of http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/apache/rat/apache-rat/0.8/apache-rat-0.8.jar
(or even better
http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/apache/rat/apache-rat/0.11/apache-rat-0.11.jar)
?

additionally we are using Apache Rat as part of our maven build
(previously it was used as part of our ant build, and was
auto-downloaded using Ivy)

Sorry I meant to say flexTasks.jar not comic.jar there. Do we perhaps have an issue with different versions of compc/flexTasks.jar?

They show up as read & write to me, staff and everyone.

$ant -version
Apache Ant(TM) version 1.9.3 compiled on December 23 2013

$java -version
java version "1.8.0_73"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_73-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.73-b02, mixed mode)

Changing java to 1.7 makes no difference and I get the same error

Yeah, that's the area of code I was looking in.

On a Mac, when you do getInfo on a file, do those sharing and permission
settings map to the 777 bits or are the different?

What version of Ant and Java are you using? Any custom class loaders or
anything like that?

No luck changing to 777 on the jar and directory and still got the same error :-(

java -jar compc.jar works as expected

ant -v showsthe exception is from flex.ant.FlexTask.resolveClass:
/Users/justinmclean/Downloads/ApacheFlexJS/apache-flex-flexjs-0.6.0-src/frameworks/projects/Core/build.xml:159: File does not exist: compc.jar

Sorry, grabbed wrong line.

Check out compc.jar's permissions in:

/Users/justinmclean/Downloads/ApacheFalcon/apache-flex-falconjx-0.6.0-bin/c
ompiler/generated/dist/sdk

Not just its rwx bits, but any other OS-level user-level permissions.

I don’t have a lib directory - here what I have:
find . -name "*lib*"
./compiler/generated/dist/sdk/ant/lib
./compiler/generated/dist/sdk/lib
./compiler/lib
./compiler.tests/lib
./js/lib
./js/libs
./lib-legacy

Totally wild guess, but can you check permissions on compc.jar in
/Users/justinmclean/Downloads/ApacheFalcon/apache-flex-falconjx-0.6.0-bin/l
ib

I don't know the Ant flex-tasks code at all, but it looks like it is
simple Java doing a File.exists() on compc.jar.

Yes it was.

I also tried installing over FlexJS it using the installer script provided but that also gives an error:

compc.jar does exist in $ANT_HOME/lib so I’m not sure what causes the above issue. Anyone have any idea?

Sadly this is not always the case for instance MIT is comparable with GPL but that doesn't mean we can use a MIT licensed bundle containing GPL software in Apache licensed code. Likewise the Apache 2.0 license itself also also compatible with GPL (i.e. GPL software can bundle Apache license software) but not the other way arround.

Any Apache comparable licence would be fine, given they license other files under MIT that’s probably the easiest for them.

I think that may of recently changed I’ll find the details and post here.

I assumed since MIT is supposedly as friendly as Apache, that all licenses
in an MIT package were also Category A or B. I didn't think I had to go
digging through their IP, especially since it was the basis for the
FlatSpark theme.

I saw your note on the issue. Why couldn't they use some other CC license
like CC-BY that doesn't have NC and/or ND? The link for CC-A in Legal
Resolved [2] seems to end up at CC-BY. I've never been clear whether they
are the same or not. I thought many forms of CC could be used in binary
packages.

Nothing I could see, just a straight boiler plate Apache 2.0 LICENSE is required I think.

BYW having extra info in LICENSE while incorrect is a licensing issue not an error as such so we could still release that and fix it in a later release.

The bits will have been available for testing for 72 hours plus the
weekend by time I get around to another RC. Plus the Last Call went out
20 days ago. Back then people wanted to get a release out before the SF
event. Have folks changed their minds?

Regarding the LICENSE in the ASDoc package: Did you see other content in
there that needs mentioning in LICENSE or is the ALv2 sufficient.

That is also a valid way around the issue, but means more work for the user. [1]

Perhaps give people a little more time to look at the FlexJS RC as it may save another RC if an issue is found? I’ll post my vote s it contains a few other minor things I found that someone may want to fix.

No word from designmodo yet. I've pushed changes to make the fonts an
optional dependency. Only folks who want to use the Flat component set
needs the fonts.
I need to do more testing of the install script changes before creating
another RC.

There is a good chance we won't have a release for the SF event. I know
everyone is busy, but these things are supposed to be found during Last
Call, not when the RC is posted.

Re: [DISCUSS] Discuss Release Apache FlexJS 0.6.0 RC1

Posted by Justin Mclean <ju...@me.com>.
HI,

> OK, left them this issue
> https://github.com/designmodo/Flat-UI/issues/213

That probably could of been worded a little differently.

If you look at the bundled SVG file you can clearly see what license it is under:
	"fontURL": "http://designmodo.com/flat",
        "designer": "Sergey Shmidt",
        "designerURL": "http://designmodo.com",
        "license": "Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported",
        "licenseURL": "http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/“,

Both the Non Commercial and No Derivatives parts of that license are incompatible with the Apache license.

It doesn’t matter if the whole bundle is licensed under MIT. I’m sure you know just because a package is under MIT that doesn’t mean that all files in that bundle are also licensed MIT. Just like you can bundle differently licensed files in an Apache licensed bundle i.e. MIT and BSD or even CDDL (for binaries).

Anyway fingers crossed they get back to us and this can be resolved quickly.

Thanks,
Justin

Hi,

JFYI the owners of the code are fairly responsive to licence issues (for instance [1]) and tend to give permission to use their stuff (few other issues). I think the simplest way to resolve this may be ask can we use the font files under an more permissive / Apache compatible licence. We should also make clear we are redistributing those files as well when asking.

Files in question are probably flat-ui-icons-regular.eot, flat-ui-icons-regular.swf, flat-ui-icons-regular.ttf, flat-ui-icons-regular.woff and lat-ui-icons-regular.svg. (I looked inside the ttf one and it also states it has a non commercial license).

Thanks,
Justin

Hi,

Just looking throuth the binary release and I notice that this file [1] is licensed with a CC license [2] (look inside the file). Sadly this is not an Apache compatible license. Anyone know the history of that file / can head some light on this? The font has a URL with points to http://designmodo.com which has [3].

Thanks,
Justin
