[jira] [Comment Edited] (PDFBOX-3557) Create new logo for PDFBox

Maruan Sahyoun edited comment on PDFBOX-3557 at 11/30/16 12:19 PM:
-------------------------------------------------------------------

On behalf of Sophie Dobrigkeit I'm adding their comments and design for a [new logo|^pdfbox_logo_dobrigkeit_01.pdf] for PDFBox:

----

PDF comes to life!
==============

Focus of the corporate design for PDFbox:

- PDFBox serves you in a best way.
- PDFBox is active.
- PDFBox is reliable.
- PDFBox is community driven.
- PDFbox is affiliated with APACHE.

Thoughts about a new logo approach:

My aim was that the logo should not to be an illustration of the formal parameters of the name/product but communicate the inner qualities and values.
There was no need to visualize the often used and widely seen term „box” once again.
Instead I was searching for a completely different approach: One that stands for „Out of the box”-thinking.
The logo should attract attention and be easy to remember. It should show how PDFBox helps PDFs come to life.

Elements in detail:
------------------------

**PDF (core concept)**
I used the letters P, D, F as the core of the project, but in a very surprising and humorous way, rendered with the handmade quality of an illustration.

**Dog**
The letters PDF combine to shape a dog. Additional elements to characterise the dog: the eye and the tail.
The shape of the dog is dynamic and friendly.
The colors correspond to the APACHE-Logotype.

**Symbolism of the dog**
- Fidelity
- Loyalty
- Assistance
- Intelligence
- Obedience
- Protection
- Community
- Cooperation
- Resourcefulness
- Communication
- Sensory Perception

(Note: in Islamic culture the dog is sometimes seen as unclean)

Typography
----------------

PDFBox is written in the font ARVO, a modern Slab-Serif. The typography communicates the aspects of „tool box” and „craftsmanship”, PDFBox is a reliable tool that works!
It is set in „Apache red” to communicate the close connection. Additionally PDF is most often associated with red.

The word APACHE is set in a font close to their actual logo. The color is grey instead of red to show that APACHE provides the framework but is not the main emphasis.

Final note
-------------

4 Criteria for a good logo:

- Eye catcher: The logo is a strong eye catcher – vivid and active. Animals attract attention naturally.
- Statement: The dog is a powerful symbol for loyalty, cooperation and intelligence.
- Originality: The letters PDF shaping a dog is surprising and humorous.
- Formal qualities: The rounded shapes of the logo form a balanced contrast to the heavy typeface.

> A while ago there was some discussion about a new logo for the PDFBox website. As the registration of the PDFBox trademark completed we discussed to move that forward.
