ANT_HOME meaning? Steps of the install? !

my ANT_HOME is pointed to /tools/bin. is it good?? Should I install the
Jakarta-ANT program and point the ANT_HOME under it?
 Could you describe me the steps of the install of xerces and tell me the
requirements? I think i've forgotten somethiing. Nevertheless, i've
followed the guide of apache...
