Arrgh TOmcat

The dependancy on a particular version of tomcat, or a particular
installation of tomcat with jar files in specific directories is driving me
up the wall.

I'm wondering whether it is worth considering a whole distribution of Lenya
*with* tomcat so that there is no question about it working out of the box.

I realise that limits it to CD based installation - or those with fast
internet links.

The main drawback of this is that you have to worry about the particular
Java version too. Perhaps we should look at the java install systems too if
licenses allow.

right, we actually just have to give people a "pointer" how to start jetty

Well, at the moment the snapshots are served from the Wyona domain,
which I guess is "illegal" anyway (without proper notification, e.g.
BEWARE these snapshots ....).

What is the policy for something like that?

And, can a Cocooner help us on setting up a "cronjob" for generating the
snapshots under the Apache domain?

Thanks

Michael

Hello all,

a very good idea, indeed!

I strongly vote for snapshots with everything packed in so that Lenya
is ready to run within minutes. I think this could lower the entry
barrier a bit.

Cocoon ships jetty already, so I would propose that Lenya do it too.
We have always to remember that bandwidth is something that Apache
ultimately pays for, and since Jetty is so smaller... and also faster to
  start and easier to co-bundle.

Also, AFAIK, usually Tomcat users have always a Tomcat ready to test it
with a .war, instead of having to redownload it.

So +1 for Jetty from a Cocooner ;-)

we can also have two targets:

snapshot-jetty
snapshot-tomcat

Look at the Cocoon jetty stuff, it should be easy to rip it off from there.

well we will see.

Andreas, would you like to do that?

+1 from a noncommitter for an out of the box distribution.

But I would prefer Jetty to Tomcat.

it definitely is. I already suggested some ago to introduce a new
target, e.g. "snapshot-tomcat" and add it to

src/targets/dist-build.xml

there are already "similar" targets:

snapshot
snapshot-src
dist
dist-src

this reminds me that there seems to be some redundancy between
"snapshot" and "dist"

I guess we have to live with that

Thanks
