Problems building Merlin
I just tried to build merlin via maven with the "maven dist"
command. I get an error in the junit tests:

I tend to use ${basedir}/conf for resources to include in the final
artifact. Resources I want included in test I generally seperate out
into a test/conf.

Yep - seems that maven 10 is not recognizing include directives using
the ${maven.conf.dir}. I ended doing the smae thing you committed a
couple of hours ago - namely replacing ${maven.conf.dir} with
${basedir}/conf. Anyway I now have Merlin building cleanly under
beta-10 on my machine, is the case for you?

Ok, I don't understand why e.g. ${basedir}/src/test is used for test classes
and ${maven.conf.dir} for the conf directory. Wouldn't it be better to use

In merlin/project.xml there is this resource include under the utittests
defintion
<resource>
<directory>${maven.conf.dir}</directory>
<includes>
<include>**/*.properties</include>
</includes>
</resource>
The variable ${maven.conf.dir} referes to ${basedir}/conf - at least it
does in beta-9. It this statement that appears to be ignored.

Ok, I didn't see any unusual things there. But the properties file is
located in conf and it seems that the rules in merlin/project.xml do
not copy files from a local conf directory, they use only test and src.

In the merlin/project.xml you will see in a defintion of the resources
to include in the unit tests. This defintion is inherited by the
merlin-jax/project.xml but the resources is not being included in the
test classpath. You could try the following and see if you can sport
anything:
$ cd merlin-extensions\merlin-jmx
$ merlin clean jar:install
This should fail (but it would be interesting to know if it passes).
Then try with a Maven debugging switchon on and look for something that
explains why the properties are not being included in
merlin-jmx/test-classes
$ maven test -X

The build is failing in the /merlin-extensions/merlin-jmx/ project. It
failing because of a missing jndi.properties file. This file is copied
to the /merlin-extensions/merlin-jmx/target/yest-classes/ directory
automatically by Maven beta-9 but for some reason its not happening i
Maven beta 10.
I am going to install beta 10 and see if I can track this down.

he means merlin-extensions/merlin-jmx/target.
i have run into this problem as well but haven't given steve much
more feedback than you. (i dont really have the time to help
debug someone else's build, especially as i dont know maven). a
work-around (until steve figures out the build problem) is to copy
merlin-extensions/merlin-jmx/conf/jndi.properties

And also your target/test-classes directory should contain:
/org
/jndi.properties
It seems from the test report that the jndi.properties file is not
present in you test-classes directory.

This is something we located before with respect to the JNDI package.
The problem is that the property file needed by the JMX package is not
included in the jar file (and it is under Beta 9). What I have to do is
figure out where the missing declaration is and get you to test an
updated project.xml.
In the meantime - to get past this point you can temporarily rename
project.xml in the jmx package to something like project.xml~
