I got extremely frustrated and started cursing while using Impress 

To reproduce what I did:

1) Start a new presentation

2) on the first page of the presentation I placed my heading and in the box
below I typed a few things

3) on the side column to the left which I always see and use, I right clicked
on my first slide and clicked "new slide"

4) Now the new slide is visible, I put in my heading and wanted then to add a
picture below. I clicked on the box in the middle to add a picture and selected
my picture

5) Somehow during resizing the picture I clicked on the "add chart" button
located in the middle of the slide and my picture vanished. The side column I
always see and use vanished also and my picture was replaced with a sample
chart of some sort.

6) I tried ctrl z to undo but nothing happened.

7) I tried to delete the chart and a message popped up saying "this function
cannot be completed with the selected objects"

8) I tried to delete the slide but the side column on the left was gone

9) I tried looking in the menus but nothing presented itself as a way to get
the side column to return or to delete the slide or to return to the previous
slide

You are in wrong place here. This is a bug tracking system and not a helpdesk.
Next time, for this kind of question, ask directly to the support forum or
users mailing list.

Step 6 is not correct
You must exit from chart to set Ctrl+Z available.
So just click on another place in the slide but outside the chart edge.

This accident is caused by issue 125613
