I've been ***experimenting*** with setting up some nightly builds on
brutus (http://wiki.apache.org/gump/NightlyBuilds,
http://wiki.apache.org/gump/BrutusConfig/NightlyBuild), using, yes, the
latest stable jdk and the latest stable ant.
While there's some unix-based permission management to try and isolate
these builds from gump, its probably totally insufficient. We'd have to
implement something like SELinux I guess, and I'm certainly not up to
doing that properly.

We can set something up for you (see
http://wiki.apache.org/gump/BrutusConfig/RequestANightlyBuild) easily
enough, but you shouldn't use this to replace an actually solid nightly
build system. These are not builds you want users to use.
My main goal with the experiments is to have figured out a good way to
set things up by the time a more trusted machine is available.
My suggestion would be that you keep things as they are, and hope the
nightly builds machine becomes available shortly. I wouldn't be too
happy if several projects start running tools like maven and javadoc on
minotaur. We don't have /that/ much memory on the box.
cheers,

How about on Brutus? Is that OK for memory, or do you need more?
