I would like [~olegk] to review the branch at branches/pull-66, since it's been a while before I've done any significant httpclient work. Also, the improvements will need to be merged into 5.0.
I'm in the process of verifying that the contribution, as reworked by me, still functions properly. Once that's done and it passes Oleg's review, I think it's ready for commit to the 4.5.x branch.
