And it's very commonly used in the ASF when voting on releases.
So you may find there are ongoing questions about why such artifacts
are being announced.

Here, I would argue that unless we have some written direction about
what release numbering scheme the incubating should use at The ASF,
then whatever a project decides to use is fine.

I wish the proposal made my Jukka includes this matter.

In other ASF projects I've seen, the convention is to use -alpha1 or
-beta2 etc. to designate such stages.

Release Candidate (RC) has a specific meaning in the ASF, as it is
what is voted on before release.

So one would vote on

1.0.0-beta3-incubating-RCn

and a successful vote would result in the release of

1.0.0-beta3-incubating

A failed vote for RCn would normally result in trying again with RCn+1
to address the cause of the failure.

I hope it's not: anyway, this RC3 should be the last one before actual
1.0.0-incubating.

Ah, ok. Makes sense then.

My perception is that the Syncope guys are trying to cut a 1.0.0,
instead of going through many 0.x.0 before, therefore they are iterating
on RC atm.

It's pretty much semantic, IMHO.

Do incubator peeps think it's a wrong approach ?

I believe Bill is complaining not about the venue,
but the choice of referring to this package as
a "release candidate" instead of simply dropping
the "RC" portion of the package name like other
projects typically do with approved candidates.

Re: Fwd: [ANN] Apache Syncope 1.0.0-RC3-incubating released

Posted by Emmanuel Lécharny <el...@gmail.com>.
Bill,

the very first incubating project that posted a mail on announce@a.o was
Tuscany, back in 2007...

In the past 5 years, just checking the incubating projects having used
annouance@a.o, I see 140 messages.
18/5/2007 : [ANNOUNCE] Apache Tuscany SDO Java 1.0-incubating-beta1 released
4/7/2009 : [ANNOUNCE] Apache CXF 2.0-incubator released!
23/8/2007 : [ANNOUNCE] Apache UIMA 2.2.0-incubating
25/3/2008 : [ANN] Apache NMaven 0.15-incubating Released
25/6/2008 : [ANNOUNCE] Apache CouchDB 0.8.0-incubating has been released
15/2/2009 : [ANNOUNCE] Sanslean 0.97-incubating
21/2/2009 : [ANNOUNCE] Apache Click 2.0.1-incubating released
etc, etc.

I don't think that suddenly something has changed in the announc@a.o
usage policy, related to Incubator releases.

Fwd: [ANN] Apache Syncope 1.0.0-RC3-incubating released

Posted by "William A. Rowe Jr." <wr...@rowe-clan.net>.
This seems very odd to me, certainly unusual among Apache projects.

The -dev and -user lists (and even general@incubator) are used to announce that
a release candidate is available and should be tested for readiness to become
an actual release. Some projects use differently-numbered alpha and beta
designations in a similar manner.

A release candidate is, by definition, something which is not yet a release.
It doesn't seem like announce@apache.org is an appropriate channel. The amount
of traffic that list would carry if every 'might become a release' candidate
was offered over what is supposed to be a lower-bandwidth, higher priority list
for users to pick up released updates.

My 2c nonbinding.

Bill
