I would suggest to take a look here: https://github.com/takari/polyglot-maven (Ruby, ATOM, Groovy) as formats..

> XML is often seen by developers as being verbose and cumbersome, I was wondering if creating a new configuration interface to Maven, using something like [YAML|http://yaml.org/] or [TOML|https://github.com/toml-lang/toml] would be possible, or is Maven too tightly tied to XML for this to be feasible?
