Fokko Driesprong resolved PARQUET-1733.

There was a discussion on the [dev-mail list|https://www.mail-archive.com/dev@parquet.apache.org/msg10917.html]. I've flagged this one as well, but the general consensus was that this method is private, and therefore it shouldn't be used by external libraries.
