Difference btween DBCP and Non DBCP solutions to connection pooling

Quick "brain-pick" here guys.
Could I just get a few points of feedback on the above. I've been reading
through some archives and the docs at JNDI-Resource-how-to and have run
into a bit of confusion.
Are the 2 types just a case of each one being for a different version of
tomcat. Or are there special circumstances that dictacte which one u use?
