problem building subversion
Hi All,
I am building subversion for the first time, and I am
getting this error:
checking for APR... configure: error:
the --with-apr parameter is incorrect.
It must specify an install prefix, a
build directory, or an apr-config file.
configure failed for apr-util
In spite of the fact that I am doing this:
./configure --prefix=/home/pehrens/usr/local/stow/subversion-1.1.3
--with-apxs=/home/pehrens/usr/local/apache-2.0.53/bin/apxs
--with-apr=/home/pehrens/usr/local/apache-2.0.53/bin/apr-config
--with-apu=/home/pehrens/usr/local/apache-2.0.53/bin/apu-config
All of which files do exist.
Phil

And when there is no List-Post header, KMail barfs.
When fine-tuning list behaviour, Pine and Mutt in
their default configurations should be considered
canonical, IMHO.

My e-mail client uses the List-Post header, so my e-mail client correctly
e-mails the list (kmail).

If I had simply hit reply-to-all to the parent of
the email I am sending now, it would have sent
courtesy copies to 2 people, and 2 copies to the
list, because the parent was handled by a MODERN
email client.
Look, I subscribe to a whole raft of lists... this
is the only one that cannot be identified by subject
line. I still think that is a reasonable complaint.
Please consider this thread dead.

As a member of a list that munges the headers of list messages, I will
say that what both of you are proposing is _not_ the way to handle this
problem. Every day there are responses that were intended for the
original sender of a message that appear on the list.
After you've read a list email, you should be able to realize that it
actually came from the list. I mean, there's the little unsubscribe
message at the bottom that should be a big hint. Nearly every mail
client in existance has a feature that resembles "Reply to All." I've
even seen one that has "Reply To List."
Munging the Reply-To header makes it a hassle to reply in context to a
post off-list. Reply To All no more than one or two extra key or button
commands.
Learn to use a basic feature of you mail client. Reply To All is there
for a reason. It's not just a doo-dad.

This topic comes up quite a bit. You can search the archive for a
thread I started about this in the past 6 months or so. The basic
advice I can give is, just remember to hit "Reply to All".

The list appears to be setting the headers it ought to be setting:
Mailing-List, list-help, list-post, list-unsubscribe, etc. An
up-to-date
email client ought to be able to figure out how to reply to the sender and to
the list. I think the From header should be left alone since changing it
makes it difficult to reply directly to the message author.
I do think a Reply-To header could be added, since once is not set. I also
wouldn't mind a tag in the subject line - "[SVN]" or something. Many
listservers allow that to be configured on a per-user basis. What's being
used to host this list?

And, the "reply-to" field should point to the list so mail software can
automate inserting the correct fields.

Well, bizarrely, the deciding option seems to be --with-apr-util.
It will configure correctly ONLY if --with-apr-util is used!!
I think that --with-apr should be sufficient.
While I'm here complaining, the configuration for this list
needs a bit of tweaking. "Subversion" should be added to the
Subject header, or the From header should be replaced with
"Subversion Users" <us...@subversion.tigris.org>. As it is
now, it is difficult to pick the list out of my 800 emails,
and when I hit the reply key it just sends to the original
poster.

Here's my configure:
./configure \
--with-ssl \
--with-apr=/usr/local/apache2 \
--with-apr-util=/usr/local/apache2 \
--with-neon=/usr/local \
--with-berkeley-db=/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.2 \
--with-httpd
It took me several tries to get it all worked out (forgot to clean out
shared libs a couple of times) - don't forget to do that if you've built
older versions successfully before.

I recently built subversion on Solaris (which took a while to figure out)
-
My experience with the situation was that it was much easier to build
Apache (with all the relevant shared modules) first, and then I simply
specified --with-apache. Apr got picked up along with it.
