Podlings Which Need Mentors

Hi -

I did a review of all 51 podlings via Whimsy and the most recent visible Report.

One result was identifying several podlings that need/want additional mentors. This email will serve two purposes.

(1) Confirm whether the list is accurate.
(2) Seek volunteers from the current IPMC. If this fails to generate enough mentor volunteers then I will ask on members@.

Here is the list:

Myriad - 2 - Benjamin Hindman, Ted Dunning - 03/01/15
S2Graph - 2 - Sergio Fernández, Woonsan Ko - 11/29/15
Milagro - 1 - Nick Kew - 12/21/15
Annotator - 3 - Nick Kew, Steve Blackmon, Tommaso Teofili - 08/30/16
Spot - 1 - Uma Maheswara Rao G - 09/23/16
OpenWhisk - 1 - Bertrand Delacretaz - 11/23/16
Weex - 2 - Willem Ning Jiang, Myrle Krantz - 11/30/16

I did not include Daffodil because I likely have already found a volunteer.

Regards,
Dave

Hi,

We also have poddling with 3 or more mentors that still don’t get enough votes to pass releases, but the situation has improved from 6 months ago, when more than 1/2 of the podlings has less than 3 active mentors. The IPMC has taken steps to ask inactive mentors to step down and vote in a number of new IPMC members and identify the podlings that need help. I’ve not done the stats but I would guess about 3/4 of podlings require IPMC votes from people other than their mentors in order to pass a release.

Thanks,
Justin

From a point of view of Myriad - 2 - Benjamin Hindman, Ted Dunning. I
have to say, the only active mentor is Ted, unfortunately Benjamin is
not active in this project. So we need more mentoring in order to
unlock the rebooting of the project, in my opinion.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Matt,

I’ve gone ahead and added you as a Mentor to OpenWhisk.

Thanks,
Dave

I'd be interested in helping mentor OpenWhisk. I've reviewed some of
their releases a while ago, so it's the project I'm most familiar with
from that list. I've also seen some talks about the project, so I'm
fairly interested in it in general as well.

Out of 52 podlings and any changes we make may have an impact on all of those and future podlings. I’m not saying we should't make changes but do need to take care when to do so and perhaps try and look at things into the perspective of the whole.

That’s one way to do it. I found other interesting bits and was going to present other issues separately.

I think that other podlings or mentors have differing issues here. I think that new ideas will be discussed in new threads.

Yes. IPMC members need to choose if they wish to be involved. Many of the podlings who need mentors are older ones that have gone through attrition in various ways including Mentor loss. About half have been rebooted. Some of these will eventually retire - we are fairly reluctant to force this, but …

A few have a good number of subscribers to their dev@ lists:

OpenWhisk and Weex have more than 200.
Annotator, Myriad, Milagro, and Spot have between 60 and 85.
Tamaya and S2Graph have just under 40.

Dave

This is a helpful collection Dave,

So one way to put these facts next to each other:
* We have 1 podling that has expressed concerned about too much IPMC
involvement. (Possibly more who are concerned but unwilling to speak up.)
* We have 8 podlings that have too little IPMC involvement.

This does look like a problem with how we decide to distribute our
attention rather than a problem of "too many cooks".

Best,
Myrle

Tamaya should likely be on that list as well.
