reg Type1 fonts in solaris openwindows

Hi,
I wanted to use fop 0.18 version to support japanese and chinese charactes.To 
add font metics files  for Type1 fonts in documentation it is saying that .pfm 
extension files ,but I have in my openwindows(solaris 7)( /lib/X11/fonts/Type1) 
.pfa font files.Is there any solution for this?

If  I proceed with only True Type fonts(.ttf),do fop 0.18 support chinese and 
japanese charactes?
