It looks like NADRA folks in Pakistan are going to be deploying some parts of Sahana to help with the relief coordination effort.
+

+
I neglected to mention earlier that Sahana is being deployed there on a server running Sri Lanka's own Taprobane GNU/Linux. That's awesome- Anuradha, Bud and the rest of the LKLUGers working on it: congratulations!!!!
+

Chamindra and Bud
+left a few hours ago for Pakistan - they are probably in Karachi by
+now. Over the weekend we worked out what was suitable to be recommended
+for use in Pakistan from the old Sahana project; see http://www.linux.lk/~chamindra/docs/Sahana-Pakistan.pdf for details. We're being careful not to over-promise anything.
+

+
Thanks to Ajith Ranabahu, one of the folks who did a lot of work on
+the Java parts of Sahana I, Eran Chinthaka, and Sudheera Fernando, one
+of the developers of Sahana II as well as Chamindra and Bud of course,
+for pulling a marathon weekend effort to get it all ready to go. In the
+last second, we had apparently screwed something up while copying it
+over to the notebook that was going .. luckily Ajith (who was on his
+way to his hometown Kuliyapitiya to spend the now half-spent long weekend by then) managed to pull over to the side and found the problem!
+

+
If they decide to use it we have to pull together a quick volunteer
+effort to localize it a bit more and to harden a few weak spots. I
+don't expect we'll have any difficulty finding folks to help!
+

+
Yesterday for the first time I had a glimpse at Sahana II. Wow,
+that's looking really solid .. its too bad its not ready yet! However,
+the data can be migrated from the old version. As soon as Sahana II
+comes a bit more of age we'll host it on a public place for people to
+play with it.
+
Sahana and Pakistan

+

Some of you may recall the disaster management system called Sahana
+we started building immediately after the tsunami. As I have blogged
+earlier taht is currently being re-done to be a totally globally
+reusable disaster management system.
+

+
As everyone knows Pakistan is currently suffering from a disaster
+that is probably not second to the tsunami in terms of human impact. I
+cannot begin to imagine how painful it must be for those people. My
+heart goes out to them.
+

+
We've been asked by a couple of groups in Pakistan to come over and
+try to help get Sahana deployed and going to assist in their response.
+I'm proud to say that Chamindra de Silva and Bud Siddhisena have agreed to go and see what they can do! They're heading off ASAP and hope to be back in a week or so.
+

+
However, I have to note that unlike many people who tried to push
+imaginery software on us during the tsunami, we are not going to push
+very hard, even though Sahana can be really helpful to them. Hoever, if
+they don't want to bite we will back off!
+

+
Good luck to Chamindra and Bud; safe travels!
+

+

+to bring it in line with the Axis2 architecture. Axis2 was designed
+from day 1 to be language independent - and we are going to implement
+it in C and then tie it into PHP/Perl/Python etc. as well as tie it
+into Linux. That way users get to stick to a single programming &
+deployment model etc. and do that across not only the Java world but
+also in C, PHP etc..
+

+

Last week Thu/Fri/Sat we had a very productive two and a half days of discussions about the nitty gritty of Apache Synapse.
+
FOSS week in Sri Lanka

+

We had a very successful free and open source software week in Sri
+Lanka in the 2nd week of September .. from Sept. 5th to 11th. The
+events touched school kids, university students, the technical
+community, CIO/CEO/CFO types as well as the general public.

+
It was really really great to see Michael Tiemann, Martin Michlmayr,
+Greg Stein, David Axmark, Bruce Momjian, Rasmus Lerdorf, Sam Ruby and
+Danese Cooper all in Sri Lanka at the same time! That's such an
+all-star cast that its still a bit puzzling how we managed to pull this
+off !!

+
The event could not have been pulled off without the tremendous
+effort and dedication by a really large group of volunteers from LK-LUG, ICTA, UCSC, LSF and various companies, most notably Virtusa. Thanks to everyone for their herculian effort!
+

+
Its also gratifying to note that MSFT has decided to respond with their own event in Sri Lanka .. at least they are playing catch up to us this time :). +
Synapse started ..

+

We started the Synapse project a few days ago at Apache with several
+other vendors. This has generated quite a bit of press, including some
+controversy. I'll blog more about PR crap later, but the most valuable
+statement I've seen so far comes from the Loosely Coupled Blog:
+

+

"But for the next few months, the best prognosis for the success of
+Synapse would be if very little was heard about it. The last thing the
+project needs is a succession of vendors joining up and combining to
+slow down the fast pace that the prime movers plan to set."
+

+Thank you Phil! Yes, that's exactly what we're going to do; hunker down
+and build the darned thing. Enough of this PR nonsense. If others want
+to join and start contributing that's great .. but there's no need to
+make fanfare about it; that's the Apache way.

+
sri lanka's foreign minister shot dead

+

Lakshaman Kadirgamar, the Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, was shot by
+a sniper a few hours ago (its 2am now) and apparently he could not be saved. There's
+no doubt who did it: LTTE, the bastard terrorists who kill anyone who
+they don't like.
+

+
Mr. Kadirgamar, himself a Tamil, was one of the greatest politicians
+Sri Lanka ever had. He was a most decent person, never accused of
+anything bad, never treated badly by even the opposition and widely
+respected globally. Why does the LTTE hate him? Because he, pretty much
+single handedly, got the LTTE on the US terrorist list around 5 years
+ago. Getting on that list meant LTTE had to cut off much of the
+fundraising activities they were doing in the US. Then several European
+countries followed suit too and banned those damned bastards.
+

+
LTTE also killed another couple today .. a husband and wife were
+both shot dead .. and that family had an 18 month old baby (who was not
+killed but ..). They are not stupid like many amateur terrorist organizations: they never claim their kills.
+
+

+
What I don't understand is why supposedly "anti-terrorist" countries
+like even UK still continue to support these organizations. There are
+well known front organizations that openly raise funds and even today
+the main spokesperson for LTTE is in London. So much for fighting
+terrorism ..

+
Sigh. Today is a day of great loss for my country.

In the mailing list there are big arguments on its architecture. For me Synapse is Axis2 module no big difference than that, but when it comes to marketing being just an axis2 module won’t give the right place , I also agree with that there should be something other than just being a module.
+
I also developed a small synapse toy, to work not just as module, and it has some nice feature like changing rule dynamically (mediator hot deployment) , flexibility of adding third party rule engines and so on,
+
So my mind I see synapse as two major component
1. Which will drive axis2 (Synapse Engine)
2. Will configure Axis2 (synapse module)
If you list a salary requirement it may well appear, to someone who has yet to appreciate your real value, to be too high or too low, and you may never get the chance to explain or elaborate. The thing to do is first make a favorable impression, and evoke some corporate response. There will always be time later to negotiate your salary - after the company decides it likes you and wants you and you're in some kind of bargaining position. It may be that their offer will not require negotiation.
+
3. "Me-oriented" Excessive use of the word "me", or "I" and prominent use of the phrases such as, "I seek," "my objective," etc. are to be avoided. Employers want to know what you can do for them. You must lead off with and elaborate on your benefit to the employer; plays up to what you think are the employer's objectives.
+
4. Assumes too much reader comprehension. This takes the form of listing and explaining numerous accomplishments, courses taken, etc., not necessarily related to your position objective.
+
5. Contains unnecessary and confusing information. (Different from being too wordy). You must be specific. Everything in your résumé should support and point to a single skill/expertise. In advertising, the simplest ad is best. No ad, no matter how high-powered, can sell several concepts at once. Neither can a résumé.
+
6. Stiff, formal language. Don't be flip, but make it readable. Aim for your audience and the people you want to impress. In short, communicate.
+
7. Includes personal information. Do not include any personal information. Name, home address, and home voice phone that's it.

+
I had heard the term Open source a few years ago, but I did not have clear understudying about that and I did not know how to contribute to open source community.
+
By accident I had a chance to work in Axis2 from the very beginning of the project, and at that time I did not think that Axis2 would be such a useful and competitive open source product. Now I think that I have good understudying on open source and I really love to open source since it make me happy, I can do what ever I want and I can share that with others and can get many many suggestion from the community to improve what I have done.
+
Some times ago open sources was just a dream to us (to Sri Lanka) but we are so luck that a great leader in open source came to Sri Lanka and stared to oxygenate open source form Sri Lanka too who was non other than Dr Sanjive Weerawarana. He was and is the crystal behind Sri Lanka open source community.
+
We are so proud to say that Axis2 to is almost Sri Lankan contribution, not only that there are lot more WS implementation done by Sri Lankan software developers, and they are used by all over the world. So we are so proud to say that being a very small country we have done more that we can do ,
+
In Apache Software foundation Sri Lankan open source community only second to US in number vise we have more that 20 apache committers and number are increasing rapidly !!!
+
We must thank Dr Sanjiva for his great work that he has done for his mother country.
