I suppose that protobuf-maven-plugin requires protoc to be installed on the developer's machine? In which case, I see why we still have to commit the generated files. Anyway, thanks for doing this. It is definitely progress.

Can you also update avatica/site/_docs/howto.md? The process is simpler and better, but there's still a process.
