getServletContext() throws a NullPointerException (more detail)

If i do request.getRequestDispatcher(...) instead everything work fine.

But I still don't have access to getServletContext(). 
I suspect that my understanding of the whole java-servlet-request-dispatcher-session-context is not good enough and that I should not have accessed the servletcontext in the first place, but I still find it strange that it would throw a NullPointerException.
