Subversion Project Information
Hi,
We are considering switching from CVS to Subversion.
As part of that process I need to gather some information on the
vitality of the project.
If anyone can add/correct to what I already have gathered from the
website/articles/google, I'd appreciate it -- it will help me to get
Subversion approved for use.
Thanks!
#####
Leadership - How consistent has project leadership been?
Consistent
Commercial Contribution - How many companies publicly contribute
intellectual property and staff to the project? What vendors?
CollabNet
User Adoption How broadly is the product used? By what type of
organizations?
Apache Foundation, KDE (Linux Windowing System), Sun Microsystems, HP,
Barclays Global Investors
See testimonials http://subversion.tigris.org/testimonials.html
Vendor Adoption
How many vendors include the product in their commercial offerings?
CollabNet (founder works for them), employ 3 of the committers. Offer
integrated solution (CollabNet Enterprise Edition) products on top of
Subversion (i.e., integrate version control, bug tracking, mailing list,
file sharing)
Commercial Support
What companies offer what type of support for the product? At what cost?
CollabNet

If you haven't looked at it http://svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.1/ch01s02.html
gives a brief history. Including the original designers, one of whom is kfogel
who already replied. (Which may answer your question about leadership
consistency.)

Your answers below seem quite accurate to me.
In the interests of fairness (since I work for CollabNet) I think
there are also other companies/individuals who provide commercial
support for Subversion. CollabNet is the only support provider whose
offerings I know about in detail, naturally.
I'd like to make a general comment about vitality: this is one of the
most consistently active, attention-paying development communities
I've ever seen around an open source project. If Liberty Northwest
wants to know that Subversion will be maintained and developed into
the indefinite future, you can relax :-). Our developer base is very
broad (see http://svn.collab.net/repos/svn/trunk/COMMITTERS), and we
add new committers regularly. This project is here to stay, and I'd
bet more on its continued maintenance than I would on many proprietary
products.
Best,
-Karl

Hello,
conversion of existing CVS repositories to Subversion is not on your list
of questions. Several major well-known projects have converted from CVS
to Subversion, and I'm sure that their experiences in this are relevant to you.
There will be issues ranging from converting the CVS repository to change
committers view a repository.
Subversion has been around for some time, and has proved itself to be of very
good quality. It's only very recently that several high-profile projects has
switched to Subversion: They would never have switched if they for a moment
believed that they may loose some data. Now, Subversion has it's oddities,
like any software. Memory usage on client side is one of them, though that has
improved.
