Weekly builds
Hi,
Since Tomcat 6 is still not stable, I propose producing a weekly Monday
build, starting with one today.
Comments ?

Does this mean bringing back the automated builds?
+1 to automated weekly builds
-0 to manual weekly builds

I think I'll write a small 5.5 -> 6.0 migration guide (not much, just a
list of items which require a change). So far, I'm going to include:
- modified directory structure
- logging API package renaming
- SSLEnabled flag
- clustering configuration change

6.0.x all have been stable for me, but I don't use many advanced
features, and no frame works atm.

We don't have to much enterprise stuff available atm on Gentoo. There is
still work being done to get facelets packaged, myfaces, and jsfapi from
Sun. We have struts, but that's about it, and not sure many are doing
apps with it atm and Tomcat on Gentoo.
But I am trying to push as many as I can in the direction of 6.0.x, to
hopefully uncover and reveal any bugs or problems.

Tomcat 6.0.9 is stable for my usage.
But, I'm not using facelets and others recents goodies, so my concern
will be in which area Tomcat 6 is unstable ?

I will try my best to follow and bump the package on Gentoo weekly. That
should just reduce it mainly to emerging tomcat, which is a pretty
simple processes. Hopefully allowing them to install/deploy/test faster.

I would love to see a stable 6.0.x =)

Ah, ok. If we can turn these around weekly, that'd be awesome. +1.
I would caution that for some builds, you won't be able to get enough
honest +1s because people won't have time to test in the given weekly
window. But I would be glad to be wrong on this one, and we'll cross
that bridge if/when we get there.

Sure.

I've been OK with releasing at least one 6.0 build (6.0.9, and also
one of the earlier ones IIRC) as Stable. I think it's ready. I've
actually been kind of curious why some of the votes have only called
for alpha/beta designation, without giving Stable as an option.

All builds would follow the release process described here:
1. create tarball and unofficial binaries, put them on
people.apache.org/~remm/tomcat-6
2. announce candidate binaries are available for testing
3. wait 2-3 days for testing
4. call for alpha/beta/stable vote on build
5. 3 +1's later publish previously created tarball and binaries to
www.apache.org/dist/tomcat/tomcat-6
6. wait 2-3 days for voting to complete and/or for more testing
7. announce release after sync of the website
Any of these builds could be abandoned before step 4 when a serious
problem is found.
The reason for (even more) frequent build is that I am frustrated with
the inability to release anything from this branch despite the apparent
lack of regressions over 5.5.x.

Hi,
Generally speaking, if the release manager (you in this case) is OK
with doing the work, I'd say sure, why not? Let's just label the
build clearly as a weekly or with a specific date, so that people
don't confuse it for a voted-upon / SVN-tagged official build.
