Incubator Report for 2015-02
We don't seem to get the automatic reminder about incubator reports..
but anyway, they are due every month until we have that IP cleared.
Timeline (love that W-M-D date format.. unique almost for 7 years)
Wed February 04
Podling reports due by end of day
Sun February 08
Shepherd reviews due by end of day
Sun February 08
Summary due by end of day
Tue February 10
Mentor signoff due by end of day
I've drafted the below at
https://wiki.apache.org/incubator/February2015
Please, could someone try to shrink it? I don't know how to write
dense - at least not at 11pm :)
Taverna
Taverna is a domain-independent suite of tools used to design and execute
data-driven workflows.
Taverna has been incubating since 2014-10-20.
Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:
1. IP clearance
2. Release - understand/document release process
3. Grow community -- need to move forward from bootstrapping/IP issues
Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?
IP clearance from University of Manchester is taking longer
due to their lawyers needing to check historical contractual agreements
(yes, even though we already have CLAs from third-parties)
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/taverna-dev/201501.mbox/%3CCAOkCRcCjf1p7o8HQ58LNM78jbomRXUwZxULha%3DgKREhK%2BZCbVg%40mail.gmail.com%3E
The IP Clearance is scheduled to be signed 2015-01-30
after which we can finally transition git, Jira and wiki
to *.apache.org and start preparing the release.
How has the community developed since the last report?
Committers seem to get a hang on Apache IP/licensing
issues, which is the main focus right now.
Committers are getting comfortable with
editing and expanding the project website.
One new (potential) contributor
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/taverna-dev/201501.mbox/%3CCAKQx%3Du0KEYVWnQ6F%2BMr0%3D2RRETUCCGA%2BadpdcTX4QvNUZTAhLA%40mail.gmail.com%3E
..he seems unfortunate in that the code he wanted to work on was
realised to be historical with a more dubious IP history,
and thus can't be part of Apache Taverna.
We worked around it by recreating the relevant XML schema:
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/taverna-dev/201501.mbox/%3C54C7BD6B.4030202%40googlemail.com%3E
One former plugin developer showing interest in getting
"back on track":
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/taverna-dev/201501.mbox/%3C54AABFF7.9000907%40ucl.ac.uk%3E
How has the project developed since the last report?
Preparing for the first release of the module
incubator-taverna-language.
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/taverna-dev/201501.mbox/%3C54C4D85E.3080608%40apache.org%3E
Obviously before we
have IP clearance and moved to *.apache.org we can only
do so much, but we have already prepared Apache licensing headers
and changed to org.apache.taverna groupIds/package names
(which means we have to be careful about where we put any
test-builds)
Some IP-dubious files have been dealt with (XML schemas,
test workflows with no declared license).
A potential show-stopper for backwards compatibility was
solved, as Taverna depends heavily on Beanshell, which
last official release is LGPL.
We joined forces with an earlier Apache Extras effort of
Beanshell https://code.google.com/a/apache-extras.org/p/beanshell/
(this has already been granted IP to Apache)
and helped push the release Beanshell 2.0b5 to Maven Central.
http://repo.maven.apache.org/maven2/org/apache-extras/beanshell/bsh/2.0b5/
Namespaces at
http://ns.taverna.org.uk/
now redirect to apache.org infrastructure
(yay .htaccess).
We have been discussing how to transition our extensive
website content from
http://taverna.org.uk/ to
http://taverna.incubator.apache.org/
- we'll leave most of the old stuff behind and at some
point call it http://archive.taverna.org.uk/
and redirect www to Apache.
Remaining infrastructure move includes - after IP clearance:
* Github -> git.apache.org
* Jira -> Jira (still discussing if this should be in bulk or manual)
* Confluence -> Confluence
* Web content (ongoing)

Great!
If (when!) the grant comes in tomorrow, the report should be updated but
to make sure it gets done either way, I've signed it now, with a note
about why it's reporting monthly still.

There were 160 mail messages to dev@taverna.incubator.apache.org

Helped release Apache extras Beanshell 2.0b5 to allow its use in Taverna

The audience for the report is the IPMC and the board. They don't look
at anything technical. They just want to know the project is healthy.
Imagine you have 15+ reports to review. What would you like to see?
Short is good. "Taverna is OK because ..."
Drop the commentary and opinion :-)
"(yes, even though we already have CLAs from third-parties)"

If someone wants to follow up, then they will. No need to provide all
