It turns out that in addition to the TikaAnnotator directory you need to check out the entire sandbox tree, or at least SandboxDistr; and you also have to have checked out the uimaj tree; and the two need to be siblings in your filesystem, even thought they're *not* siblings in the subversion repository. Or something like that--I eventually gave up and just wrote my own ant build.
