performance dependency from disk type?

We are about to install a new server, where the subversion repositories
are to copied over too (same OS/CPU type, physical copy should raise no
issues). At Monday I heard during a roadshow, that SATA has rather poor
performance for (SQL) databases compared to USCSI/FC. How does this look
with the ISAM like Berkeley DB? Will there usage of SATA be a serious IO
bottleneck or is the disk performance difference just the usual there? My
concern is, that I will remove bottlenecks of RAM and CPU speed, but maybe
not of disk IO...
