Sidebar color scheme survey

Hi,

Development of the sidebar is progressing well. It already looks a lot
like the mockups posted by Xin Li on December 18th [1]. I have
concentrated on the underlying framework, so there is only one partially
migrated panel so far. Nevertheless the framework is now flexible
enough to think about the default color scheme to use. There are
developer builds [2] and an extension that allow live evaluation of the
nine different color schemes from [1].

I would like to ask you to either look at the mockups at [1] or try the
developer builds [2] and tell me what color scheme you like best.

General information about the sidebar, the current state of development
and how to help can be found in the wiki [3].

Thanks in advance for you help,
Andre

PS: I remember Rob having asked the same question on our Facebook site
but can not find the email anymore. I also remember that the feedback
was somewhat inconclusive. Does anybody know the details?

Re: Sidebar color scheme survey

Posted by Xin Li <lx...@gmail.com>.
Hi,

I did these 9 options. For my own, I recommend Option 2A and Option 2C.
Because the visual difference between “unfolded” and “folded” is more
clear, and it is easier for users to distinguish. And “Gradient” or
“Emboss” effect looks more integral.

Welcome more users to share your thoughts. Thanks.

Re: Sidebar color scheme survey

Posted by Fabrizio Marchesano <fm...@gmail.com>.
Great news, thanks Juergen!
I installed two custom task pane extensions (in Calc and Writer context,
written in Java using the NetBeans plug-in) without making any change to
the code or configuration files, just installing the same OXTs working on
AOO 3.4.1, but, even if they where shown and worked perfectly in the
original Task Pane container, the same Tool Panels were shown empty in the
Sidebar.
Just a try (on Windows XP 32 bit and Fedora 18 64 bit) but seeing my tool
panels on the Sidebar, even empty, with their title and icon ready to be
clicked on, made me even more excited than I already was about the
opportunities given to developers (and, in consequence, users) by AOO 4.
I am at your disposal for any further test, just tell me what I have to do.
See you very soon!
Regards,

Fabrizio

it works already, I have tweaked a test extension with the old and the
new mechanism. Supporting an own panel as well as integrating in an
extension panel as additional dock.

Andre gave me the necessary support and I plan to include in my FOSDEM
talk. I will at least give an outlook and it open s even abetter
integration opportunity for extensions developers.

Hello Andre,
thanks for your quick reply.

I'll be glad, too: I will stay in Brussels only on Saturday, I hope to have
the chance to meet you.

I'll try immediately and let you know (hopefully in person at FOSDEM).

Not yet. I plan on making the source public when a) I find a good place
for it and b) the configuration and API changes/enhancements settle.

My goal is to stay compatible with the current way of adding sidebar
extensions. So, if you develop such extensions then it would be very
helpful if you could test them with the developer build. Just install
them like you do that now and they should be visible in both the
old/current and the new sidebar.

Re: Sidebar color scheme survey

Posted by Fabrizio Marchesano <fm...@gmail.com>.
Hello Andre,
I just tested the Sidebar Developer Build on a Windows XP virtual Machine
and it looks really great, thanks for the great work by my side, too!
May I ask if I can include a screenshot of the Sidebar Developer Build into
my FOSDEM presentation?
The subject of my talk is the development of custom Task Pane estensions,
and I would like to show a glimpse of the future (of course, mentioning the
source wiki page and specifying that the screenshot is related to a
work-in-progess UI).
I'm highly interested in custom sidebar extension development (I began
creating custom sidebar plug-ins for clients in IBM Lotus Symphony
environment) and I would like to contribute on the subject; I currently use
Java and NetBeans plug-in to create my extension, is the source code for
the Java extension for development and debugging of the sidebar available?
Is there any other way I may help?
About the color scheme survey, my preference goes to C1, followed by B1 and
A1.
Thanks in advance and best regards,

Fabrizio

Andre,
  Thanks for the great work!
I search out the original sidebar post on facebook:
http://www.facebook.com/ApacheOO/posts/395424523873910
And the result till now shows that B1 and B3 are more favorite, and A1 is
following.

Here is what I counted out (some people voted for multiple options. And
if some one just say "I like 3", I will +1 for A3, B3 and C3):

A1: 4
A2: 1
A3: 2
B1: 5
B2: 1
B3: 5
C1: 2
C2: 1
C3: 3

Re: Sidebar color scheme survey

Posted by Kevin Grignon <ke...@gmail.com>.
Andre,

This is looking really great.

Re: colour
An initial goal for the sidebar is to compliment, but not compete with of distract users from the canvas. In an effort to minimize UI noise and help keep the focus on the editor canvas - the work - I recommend we adopt a hybrid of proposal 1 & 3: a grey background with suitable contrast for the title sections, a darker grey.

Another option might be to use a gradient for the section title. Darker to lighter, top to bottom. This would frame the header, reinforce the expand/collapse affordable And reinforce the info architecture. More importantly, if the gradient resolved to the background colour, it would eliminate the line between the header text and the content. This will strengthen the association between the section title and content and mitigate the Lego effect. I can prep a sketch to illustrate my point.

Re: control styles
Again, noise reduction and consistency would be best. Flat backgrounds are consistent with other toolbars and reduce non-actionable pixels. I recommend we implement Proposal B.

Again, great job.

I'm looking forward to exploring new and exciting uses for the sidebar framework.

Best regards,
Kevin

I think that we should base our choice on whether it looks good or not,
OpenOffice is not a physical simulation.

And the gradient of the background of the toolbars has the opposite
direction.

No, they don't. The line separators between the tool box buttons do not
affect the size of the buttons nor of the tool boxes.

I agree, that this should be addressed. But fixing this would require a
much more complex layouting of the panels.

I am not sure which icons you are referring to. The choice of icons is
still subject to change.

I made this change some days ago. In the next developer build this will
be fixed.

This works well on my machine, but this is a developer build and may
not work on others.

I don't agree. The role of the menu button is very different from that
of the deck buttons. Also, the menu button is a check box while the
deck buttons are radio buttons, so their behaviour is different.

I am not sure what border you are referring to. The current design of
the buttons, which is likely to change, only have a border while being
selected.
For the menu button that is only the case while the menu is being shown.

I will work on focus traveling when the overall design has settled.

The Impress panels are not yet supported. I am currently working on that.

I like best the version 2A. But I think the gradient should be the
opposite direction, from light at the top to dark at the bottom. A light
is expected to come from top right, therefore the lighter color should
be at the top and on the left side of an object. The drop-down-triangles
have the right direction for the gradient.

I do not like the line separators. The take place without any use. I
normally remove this separator lines in our current toolbars.

I have download your Windows build and played with it beyond the design.
I know, it is work in progress, but I see:
- If you drag the pane smaller, some elements become unaccessible. The
elements should rearrange and/or the pane needs a scrollbar.
- If you set the UI scaling to 130% (and restart!), you see that the
margin between the button bars becomes wider. That is ugly and wasted
place, because the buttons bars itself are not extended. Our current
toolbars arrange the buttons in rows, without a margin between them, and
therefore there is no margins, which can increase. That is more useful.
You do not have always large screens, but have to consider netbooks and
tablets as well.
- The icon size is always small, although the general setting is "large
icons", even after restart.
- If the side bar is undocked, the row of the title bar still exists and
the window title is empty. The title bar should be removed in undocked
state and the title moved to the window title bar.
- The title bar has vertical dots on the left side, which normally
indicate, that this part can be dragged around. But that is not the case
here and therefore no dots should be shown.
- Between the menu icon and the other tab buttons in the tab bar is a
separator line. It is not necessary, because the menu icon has nearly
always a border.
- Cycling with F6 seems to hit the side bar, but nothing there gets active.
- That is likely an effect of the draft state, but if in Impress the
current task pane is closed and I click on the "Animation" tab in the
tab bar of the side bar, AOO crashes.

Kind regards
Regina

On my Ubuntu 12.10 system, I got the following errors:
/opt/ooo-dev3/program/soffice: 84: /opt/ooo-dev3/program/soffice: /opt/ooo-dev3/program/../basis-link/program/pagein: not found
/opt/ooo-dev3/program/soffice.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libsofficeapp.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

NB: to avoid problems with my AOO 3.4.1, I renamed the folders to the same used by the ooo-dev (3.5) version, previously uninstalled.

This is a "problem" only with my developer build which I build on a
fairly up-to-date Ubuntu on a machine under my desk.
The releases will be built on other computers with older Redhat
versions and should work fine.

I did the download today and tried to install it on my Debian Testing
(Debian 7.0 Wheezy) which become stable in the next time.

This didn't work because there is glibc in version 2.13 and not 2.15.
There will be no change up to the release date.

So in further time no Debian User can install ApacheOpenOffice 4.0 with
the Sidebar.

Hi Andre,

Thanks for the screenshots.

Our ux team is working on the detail design of the layout. We will give a
clear indication of the gradient color and the icon layout. We will send

I have uploaded three screenshots (Windows, Ubuntu, Mac) for a slightly
modified color scheme. Colors are based on system colors as provided by
the StyleSettings class. I used the result of GetDialogColor() as base
for most background colors. Panel, deck and tab bar use it unmodified.
For the panel title bar I use a second color that is the dialog color
with a modified luminance (-15). That same darker color is also used for
the border around the deck. The border of tab buttons uses
GetActiveBorderColor().

Please have a look: http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Sidebar#Status

I have not yet checked in my changes but will do if anybody is interested.

I will try this week to find some time to play with the colors. On
Windows we are not so far away from the system colors, anyway. Maybe it
is good enough to use the cleaner look (not so many lines and boxes and
title bars as the old (Impress) taskpanel) together with the system
colors. Besides, the system colors still offer some choice. And we can
modify them a little bit like in the Impress slide sorter. Its selection
color is based on the system selection color but is made a little
brighter (I think). There are a lot of knobs to turn. Lets see what I
can do.

Re: Sidebar color scheme survey

Posted by Xin Li <lx...@gmail.com>.
Hi Ariel,

Thanks for your concern about the issue of color customization. I think we
need to **discuss this issue as two parts:

1. Do we need to create the new look and feel for AOO?
We always say that the current look and feel for AOO is out of style. We
know that AOO just use the system color by default. But if we want AOO
looks more modern and fashion, we need to do some change, we need to have
new design for default look and feel. You can see that most of the PC
software have their own default look and feel, like: MSO, Photoshop, Adobe
Illustrator and so on. I think if the default visual style of software is
good, the requirements of change color will be smaller.

2.User also can change to other colors if we have default new look and feel.
We create new look and feel does not mean that we forbid user change color.
User can also change color if they don't like the default look and feel.
And I think the reasonable way is user can change the whole interface with
sidebar to other colors.

Thanks.

If you see something gray in the user interface, it is because your
system uses that color for painting that particular object. If a user
doesn't like gray, s/he has to simply switch the desktop theme.

Moving away from the system's style settings only renders the sidebar as
something that does not "fit" with the rest of the application/desktop:
http://people.apache.org/~arielch/images/sidebar/

These screen shots are from different GTK themes, the sidebar is
obviously not following the rest of the application (the Navigator is
side-by-side to show this fact).

Xin,
Thanks very much for your summary!
And the option 10 looks very good! I suggest we move forward to get a
development build out. So that not only we can get more UX feedback, not
also we can early start FVT for this big new feature.

KG01 - exactly, the goal is to differentiate the section titles from each other while reinforcing the association between section header and it's content. Who said design was easy :) other solutions could be explored if the gradient is not ideal.

I don´t think that would work. The current orientation of the gradient
is chosen so that the title bar blends into the panel so that the user
can recognize both to belong together. Inverting the gradient would
work only when we make the background of the panel dark.

AOO is not a physics simulation.

Can you make a little change and draw the color gradient of the
subtitles the other way round: light color at the top edge and darker
color at the bottom edge? And put the pictures side by side to allow to
compare them?

Background for the request: When ever I see such gradient in an UI, it
assumes, that the light comes from left-top, so that the top and the
left parts of the elements are lighter then the right and bottom parts.

Hi all,

Thanks for your votes and your feedback.

I have summarized all votes from Facebook and mail list. The result is :
A1:8 A2:7 A3:6
B1:8 B2:8 B3:10
C1:3 C2:2 C3:5

For control style, it seems that many user prefer proposal B (Simple line
separator). As Kevin's suggestion, noise reduction and consistency would be
best. So separators between clusters may be better. So we use separators
between clusters to separate the buttons of cluster.

For content panel color, it seems that there no obvious winner. I would
like to share my thoughts on the visual style because it is already relate
to color topic when we do the side bar migration. As we discussed before,
the current grey color used in AOO is dark and looks out of style. We
should do some light-weight change in AOO. So maybe we should start
consider the light-weight color change when we do the design and avoid to
use dark color that make the UI too heavy.

So I create a light-weight gray proposal based on the option we discussed
before.I use a light grey on the side bar and use a gradient for the
section title.

And I also align the same light grey to slide thumbnail panel background in
Presentation. Because the content area on the center should have the
highest priority, the rest elements should have lower priorities, and items
with the same priority should be treated with the same way.

I have added the latest design(option10) to AOO UX wiki page. Please see
the latest design by the link:

I like proposal B (I think it's the most "stylish" one, and adds less visual noise), but I tend to agree with Kevin's comments: I'd like better a mix between B1 and B3: light grey panel + dark grey title. That way, it does provide certain contrast for the title, but doesn't draw too much attention to the panel itself, allowing the user to focus his/her attention on the doc.
Otherwise, it does look nice ;)

Thanks for sharing.

Two comments align with some earlier comments in this thread:

1) use a grey background to keep the focus on the document
2) use of gradient should be used to provide contrast where required

So great to have so many feedback!

Here is my preference:
- B1 for properties panels, which have many buttons and controls.
- B3 for panels as clipart and template, which have many pictures.

In fact I like all the design options. While existing users' adaption when
they upgrade to 4.0, I suggest we start from the "normal" style in 4.0, and
improve gradually per wider feedback after.

Sorry. It is easy to forget that Facebook is not accessible
everywhere. Here is a copy/paste:

Tomáš Kebert B2. Gradient would look inconsistent on different
platforms, emboss looks oldschool, and so does the dark gray
background of titles.

Tomáš Kebert On a different note, I think something like "apply these
setting on the style used" would come in handy added to such panel.

Martin Schröder i'd vote for proposal 2, but i don't like either of
a,b,c. i think b is the most clearly variant, but the groups of
buttons should be separated differently (i don't know how...)

Shaun Michael Coates Proposal 3 - My eyes easily distinguished content
panels with this option.

Proposal B - The simple lines as a spliter looks the cleanest.

Rob Lewellyn Proposal 3. Nicest contrast!

Luis Elizondo B3 is my favorite. B2 it's nice too.

Michael Cohen B3 is my pick! It's easy to read and it's separates the
buttons nicely.

Matthew Nelson B3 BINGO!

Mindaugas Baranauskas A3

Francesco Esposito even the toolbar at the top of the same color
(gray), the pale blue of Windows is horrible

Francesco Esposito A2 or B2

Raffaello Palandri A1

Osvaldo Meloni VERY DIFFICUL.... diria Tevez !!!!!

Ariel Shushan B3 - easiest to read

Gonzalo Varela B1 for me. Classy, easy on eyes and clear to read, I
avoid bright backgrunds in apps that you spend a lot of time workin on
it. Keep it simple please.

We have two votes for A2 at
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/openoffice-progetto-it/201301.mbox/browser
to which I'll add mine too. So make it +3 for proposal A2 as listed at

For the panel decoration I prefer the proposal A (Gradient Color
Background) because the separator lines or the emboss effect add too
much visual noise.

For the panel color scheme I prefer proposal 1 (Grey Title and Panel)
because this panel is for setting properties which the other proposals
don't convey. A gradient for the Title from dark grey to grey would be
even better.
