Jenkins builds and Mustella
Hi,
Just to let you know what I'm working on:
I'm working on the build machines to create new/updated Jenkins jobs
for the following builds:
- flex-tlf (-): succeeds
- flex-sdk (main checkintests): succeeds
- flex-sdk_release (release): fails, waiting for Extension Manager install
- flex-sdk_asdoc (asdoc): succeeds
- flex-falcon (?) - this is a work in progress
Once all these jobs pass, I'll disable/remove the older versions.
I've also create a Windows Azure Win2008 VM that I've set up with all
the stuff needed to run Mustella. It did a successful (failureless)
run of 'tests/components/Label'. It's currently running 'vanilla'
Mustella (./mini_run.sh -all) to see what remains to be fixed on that
machine. For one: I haven't set up a server to handle 'localhost' yet,
so I expect plenty of failures. It's a work in progress ;-)

The only job I saw that had anything to do with release was one that
called 'source-release'.
The full 'release' task requires the Adobe Extension Manager, which
I've asked the people on the build list to install on 'windows1', like
they did for Pixelbender.

The release target was working before so all the bits should be there? I think in order to do a release you have to do make main first?
Thanks,

If you set up Jenkins on your Azure VM and run Mustella through that, you
can set up Jenkins to send an email to the dev list for failures. Just
like how the Jenkins instance on builds.apache.org is configured. We will
have to allow the emails from your email@eriksVM.cloudapp.net to the
allowed list here.

I'm playing around with Cygwin and Mutt/Fetchmail for the patch server.
We'll see if it works or not.

Spending Limit is 0 by default (first thing I checked when they asked
for my creditcard for "verification" ;-)).
My Windows lore is rather stale after a couple of years on a Mac...
does anyone have an idea on how to report on the Mustella runs from
this VM to the dev list (or elsewhere)?

I have been working with only my free small instance. I never got a chance
to see if I needed a larger instance. One thing you may want to do is to
ensure that your 'Spending limit' is set at 0. And see when your machine
gets disabled. That will give you an idea how many hours we get for free
with a large machine.
Not sure if that helped ;-)

Om,
Since you've looked at Azure before, maybe you can help with this:
On our Enterprise MSDN subscription I have 1500 free 'small instance'
hours per month. The VM I've set up is a 4 core, 7 GB 'large' machine.
Best I can tell there is a 4x multiplier for that type of
instance/hour or 375 hours, barely half a month. So I figure that if I
scale back to a 2 core instance, I have a full month of computing per
month 'for free'... But I know nothing about this IRL, so maybe I'm
totally off?

Re: Jenkins builds and Mustella

Actually, it IS the ideal setup, if a Medium instance (2 cores, 3.5 GB
memory) is enough to run Mustella once a day. The 1500 small instance
hours that come for "free" with our Enterprise MSDN subscription are
enough to run this setup round the clock.
But you got me thinking: once Mustella is up and running, we may
consider moving the Jenkins jobs for the various Flex related builds
to this machine as well. But first things first...

AW: Jenkins builds and Mustella
Posted by "christofer.dutz@c-ware.de" <ch...@c-ware.de>.
The payment strategy for Azure seems to be rather strange anyway. I just deleted my Azure VM hosting ma TeamCity build agent as the VM costs keep running even if the VM is shut down. The Support told me that in order to pevent MS from billing me for the idle time, I would have to delete the VMs after using them and setting them up the next time I want to use them (Very disapointing)
Would have been the ideal setup for CI Flex builds :-|

Betreff: Re: Jenkins builds and Mustella
A little update:
- flex-tlf (-): succeeds
- flex-sdk (main checkintests): succeeds
- flex-sdk_release (release): waiting for Extension Manager install
- flex-sdk_asdoc (asdoc): succeeds
- flex-falcon (all) - succeeds, marked 'unstable' because some
FalconJx tests fail
I'll let these run a week or so, just to see if they keep up and react
correctly to commits etc., after that I'll retire the 'old' jobs and
put these in production (have them report failures and restores to
dev@a.o. and the 'breaking' contributor).
On the Mustella Azure VM: had two runs of about 7 hrs (doh!) fail
because the JavaVM ran out of memory. Have set ANT_OPTS system
variable to give the JavaVM 512MB to play with, see if that fixes
things. Also have downsized the Azure VM to a Medium instance, which
(if it has the horsepower to run Mustella: 2 cores, 3.5GB) should give
us enough credits to run it full time. The previous size (Full) only
allowed us to run it for the first half of each month :-)
Plans for the Azure VM:
- install Apache to serve 'localhost' to Mustella
- install Jenkins to automated the git pulls, Mustella run and report
the results
Once I'm satisfied with the setup, I'll give the entire PMC access to
the VM via RDP. That way we can all work on getting all the tests to
pass and tweak the system.

Re: Jenkins builds and Mustella

The change of the Flash Player content debugger and the addition of
the localhost access has reduced the number of failures on the last
run from 280 to 140. I'm now out of my depth on Mustella and I'll
leave the fixing of the rest to the pros ;-)
I will now install Jenkins and try to have it do a daily run and
report it's findings through email...

Re: Jenkins builds and Mustella
Posted by Erik de Bruin <er...@ixsoftware.nl>.
I was running 11.7 content debugger. Have now switched to
11.1.whatever. Also installed Apache server, localhost is pointing to
'mustella/tests'. I just started another run, let's see what that
gives us.
One question: after one run, before doing another, is there something
I need to 'clean up' or can I just run './mini_run.sh -all' again?
Thanks,

Ouch - we may have to keep an eye on the queue as there's only one windows box and it shared will all Apache projects.

Can we disable the localhost tests in any way to see how many of those are real failures?

Another update.
builds@a.o.: the broken SDK build this morning showed that the new
jobs work as expected (picked up broken-ness, emailed, re-ran when fix
was comitted and email when build succeeded), which gave me the
confidence to disable the 'old' jobs (names starting with capital F)
and put the new jobs (lowercase f) 'in production' - which basically
meant putting the dev@ email in the notification task.
Mustella on Azure: mini_run.sh now runs as a Jenkins job. The run
fails, probably on a path/environment variable issue somewhere in the
chain Windows->Jenkins->Cygwin->ant->Java. Need help on this (there is
another thread that deals with this issue specifically).

What FlashPlayer version did you use? I think the bitmaps only work for
11.1/11.2. That might explain why there's a lot of gradient failures.
I guess at some point we should try to get all tests to pass on more
recent players.

Re: Jenkins builds and Mustella

Next update:
Infra installed the Extension Manager, Jenkins job 'flex-sdk_release'
now runs cleanly.
Mustella successfully completed a full run this night, taking a little
under 9 hours to complete. It reports 35,446 success and 228 failures.
I will need help fixing most of these (gradients and stuff, looks
like...) Up next, install web server to allow Mustella access to
localhost (which should take care of a number of the 228 failures).

Nice!
Are the FalconJX tests failing on your system as well or is this just the
Jenkins run?

Re: Jenkins builds and Mustella
Posted by Erik de Bruin <er...@ixsoftware.nl>.

Posted by Alex Harui <ah...@adobe.com>.
Excellent. Thanks for working on this stuff.
Recently, I checked in some shell scripts that I only tested on Mac that
take a patch file, run MustellaTestChooser and run the tests it finds. It
expects 'git status' format which is different from 'git log' format, but
maybe you can leverage some of that in Jenkins so we don't have to run all
of the tests which takes many hours.
FWIW, I'm now most of two weeks into trying to get clean mustella runs on
both Mac and Win. I put these scripts together to encourage folks to run
mustella more often so we don't erode this badly again. I'm also toying
with the idea of trying to set up an extra windows machine as a patch
tester using these scripts.
