merging branch back to trunk

I have merged the branch back to the trunk. Everything was running there
except the new tests which I've disabled for now. I'll split the store
stuff out into a small continuum-store project as Jason suggested and
try and hammer it with tests now and see how we go. If no good, we can
develop the Hibernate interface in there.
