Thanks for the detailed explanation. Just to make sure I understand how the situation stands after my last changes:

- the main Sling launchpad is configured with a framework property {{sling.home}}, which is used by various Oak components as a fallback in case specific properties are not defined , at the moment {{org.apache.jackrabbit.oak.plugins.segment.SegmentNodeStoreService}} and {{org.apache.jackrabbit.oak.plugins.index.lucene.LuceneIndexProviderService}}
- the Karaf features use component properties to explicitly configure the above mentioned services . This is done to simplify the installation setup, as it allows Karaf users to only use {{feature:install}} and everything is correctly configured
- there is no interaction between the configuration defined in the Sling launchpad and the Karaf features

So the issue that we're discussing here is how to be consistent between the way we configure components in both the Sling launchpad and the Karaf launchpad. Is that correct?
