Felix on a UNC90 platform

Dear all,

I have written up some of my experience in running Apache Felix on the
UNC90 platform (ARM9 chip, 16 MB flash, 32 MB RAM). You can find this
document here:

http://www.visnet.ch/smartbuildings/running-apache-felix-on-the-unc90-platform/

I'd be very interested in your comments or additional questions.

Kind regards,

Oops, yes, that was a cut-and-paste issue...I put them all back in.
Thanks again for doing this.

Looks good, but I notice most of the links (such as the one to your FAQ
entry dealing with the protocol handlers) are missing. Maybe you wanna
also insert the links to uClinux, /k/, and so on.

Very nice page otherwise.

David,

As a potential placeholder for such an "alternative VM" page, I created
the following on our wiki:

http://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/FELIX/Apache+Felix+and+Alternative+Java+VMs

Which generates the following static page:

    http://cwiki.apache.org/FELIX/apache-felix-and-alternative-java-vms.html

What do you think?

Re: Felix on a UNC90 platform

Posted by Bart Elen <Ba...@cs.kuleuven.be>.
We have positive experiences with running felix on the Intel Mote 2 (ARM CPU, 32 MB flash, 32MB RAM).

We have tried following VM's:
- blackdown 1.3.1 (with 16MB relative large and project is abandoned)
- JamVM version 1.3.0 (has URL handler problem: http://felix.apache.org/site/faq.html + it crashed a
lot (we probably had a C library problem) )
- phoneME Advanced

Of those three VM's, we got the best stability and performance with phoneME. It supports java 1.4
(Connected Device Configuration), just in time compilation and has a footprint of 2.8MB (statically
linked). It can run felix right out of the box and does not have the URL handler problem.

It's only deficit: they don't have released binary builds for ARM yet, so you have to compile it
yourself.

Greetings,

Bart

We (at ISTI-CNR) have successfully deploy Felix platform on a ARM
embedded system called "Stargate" running PlatformX/Linux.

The JVM used by our tests was Java Blackdwon 1.3.1, we are planning to
port on such platform the Felix UPnP Base Driver and we are planning to
try to cross-compile and test more recent JVM and Classlibrary like: GNU
Classpath 0.95 with SableVM, CacaoJVM, Kaffe, JamVM, etc.

Ciao,

David,

I think this is great that you wrote about your experiences...we should
document these types of experiences on our web site.

I think we should create a "Felix and alternative VMs" web page on our
site, perhaps yours could be the first contribution. Sound good?

Perhaps other people could contribute other experiences too.

Thanks.
