index.htm (etc) in sub directories

How do I make the default files (index.htm, index.php, etc) 
come up automatically in the sub direcorties of a web site. 
For instance if a user goes to http://url.com the index.php 
does not have to be typed in, but if you go to 
http://url.com/sub/ it doesn't unless I add the 
http://url.com/sub/index.php.
