Being picky on usernames
Hi,
It seems that James is pretty picky on usernames; be it the recipient
names or the sender names. It was explained on some previous postings
that the username part on email addresses should be lowercase. If that's
the case, I believe that James should make any addresses to lowercase.
TIA,
Oki

Hi,
Thats easy.
1. change config to use database to store users (see notes below )
2. create table Users in James database
I havent found documentation for this but this works on Mysql:
CREATE TABLE Users (
username varchar(50) NOT NULL default '',
password varchar(50) NOT NULL default '',
PRIMARY KEY (username(1)),
KEY Key_password (password(1))
) TYPE=MyISAM;
3.restart James
it it works OK you now should be able to insert new users straight to
database using remote admin 4555
(if anything wrong check what exception you got )
4. if this works you can use servlet or anything to insert new users to that
table and James will use it.
Dont forget to add JDBC driver to classpath
also
check that maildatabase ir pointing to the right path in config
and dont forget to comment out using file for users and uncomment using
database !
It works for me.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Kazys Jocionis

You don't know that it is non-compliant vis-a-vis case, unless you know the
intention of the sender.
They might send to James@x.co.uk (which user may not exist) in good faith
simply because that is the address they have been given.
In which case it is not a non-compliant address, the case is that "no valid
user of this name exists in this domain" even if james@x.co.uk does exist as
a valid username in the domain.
If your system is case insensitive because the sysadmin has decreed all
usernames to be treated as case-insensitive (perhaps to map directly onto
case-insensitive treatment of usernames by some other part of the network)
you can deliver James@x.co.uk mail to user james, and know it is going to
the right guy.
This isn't non-comliance on the part of the sender, it is non-compliance on
*your* part, because you ought to have configured your system to return the
mail as undeliverable...
The fact that your actions are more helpful dosen't make them right. So, by
all means treat usernames as case insensitive, but watch your step about
what you notify the sender.
Phew, lecture over, class dismissed ;)

I'm more interested in the brute-force method; accept any mail which has
non compliant address and then translate the upper/mixed-case address to
lower case, and also notify the sender that his/her destination address
was not RFC compliant.
BTW, I'd like to start writing mailets; what documentation should I
start with (the ones next to the James' Javadoc, I mean). What I have in
mind is to have a mailet that will attach the real names to the wrong
addresses and have the real names taken from the database; at the end,
the mail addresses would look like "Real Name
<no...@somewhere.com>."

Hi Charles
"or wait for a release!"
Any idea when that might be? We too, would like to take benefit of the
case-insensitive user names.

Which is in CVS as a proposal. You need to build from source to get
this. See james-dev list or wait for a release!

The problem is that the expected behaviour of usernames is case insensitive,
but the compliant behaviour is case-sensitive, therefore the only sensible
route would be to have it as a configurable option.
As far as I understand it, anyway.
