Success stories

I know there is a repository mine-is-bigger-than-yours list, but
no-one seems to be collecting any success stories yet. I thought
I'd drop this small one to get the ball rolling (perhaps someone
would like to collect them and stick them on the website somewhere).

History
-------
A small group (3-5) worked on the early revisions of a project for
a customer. They used Subversion for version control and all
  worked merrily away.
Development then moved out to the customer premisis to finish
development and deploy to the customers environment.

The Success Bit
---------------
Everyone was expecting the last bits of work in-house to be the
final development. However, it turned out that futher changes
were going to be needed requiring more builds and development
time. Staff were already onsite, and without Internet access
couldn't access the in-house repository. The customer had no
concept of version control (they're not in the software development
business) and had no system of their own.

Subversion to the rescue! We installed Apache with the Subversion
DAV modules on a Windows 2000 server on the customer site and
created a blank repository database. This literally took 5 minutes to
get up and running from scratch.
Using "svnadmin dump" in combination with "svndumpfilter"
from the in-house Linux server, we sent a copy out to the customer
site, with full history. Half an hour later, a complete working
Subversion environmemt with all the project history was available in
an otherwise isolated development environment. Work continued under
the safe umbrella of a version control system.

Thanks to the Subversion team for making it so easy!

Wow, that's great to know. (I run Debian too, but of course I don't
use apt-get to install Subversion, since need to stay bleeding edge.)

I don't think that the existence of packages and package managers
means the complexity of source install somehow doesn't matter anymore,
however... :-)

Same for me here :) I tried installing subversion back at the 0.14 times
and I desisted. As soon as I found svn debs lying around I migrated all
my cvs repositories to svn and had never had a problem which wasn't
caused by myself.

The last one uncovered a big error from me. I was backing up the entire
/var/lib/svn dir (I mean, no dump's). When I tried to copy one of the
repositories to a redhat box (yeah, that was when I couldn't checkout
with 0.23 due to the new svn+ssh) I got a berkeley db version mismatch.

Im really impressed by the quality subversion has had since a long time.

Whenever we (Oh my, it makes me believe Im part of the "team" just for
using it) reach 1.0 it will be rock solid stable.

I can really agree on this, if it were not for the -deb's I wouldn't
be using subversion right now.

I don't know, the Debian packages make the install an absolute breeze.

I'm glad to see the smileys :-), but let's not interpret one success
story as proof that the Apache install has suddenly become as easy as
instant pizza. Unless we're also willing to count all the posts we
see about Apache/SVN installation woes as proof of the opposite! :-)

Yes, it's getting easier. No, it's still not as easy as setting up
ra_svn (or CVS). Yes, to some degree this is comparing apples and
oranges, since Apache gives you a lot of features, too. But it's not
instant pizza yet...

Sweet!

To all those naysayers about "wah! wah! Apache makes it too hard!", I just
want to say, "we told you so. we always said, 'give it time, and the install
will be a snap.'"

pthtpth...

:-) :-)

On that front, I've been using TortoiseSVN for our Windows GUI users
(not sure if yours are Windows or not) with great results.

Re: Success stories

About a month ago I finally told my supervisors that I thought it would
be safe and worthwhile to switch to Subversion (from CVS).

So far we've only switched one sub-project (the one I work on). (Other
projects are worked on by less technical folks, who may resist learning
a new tool, especially if there's no mature GUI client.)

We're now on our 111th commit, and have had no problems. (Granted, we
haven't yet been exercising copy/move much, or even merge for that
matter, but I've still been pleasantly surprised at just how problem-free
the experience has been).

The global revision numbers (and their implications) alone have been well
worth the switch.
