ConcurrentModificationException when nesting phrases inside a proximity search (ComplexPhraseQueryParser)

Trying to perform a search with the following structure:

query: "term1 (term2 OR \"multiword phrase term\")"~3
url: solr/collection/select?defType=complexphrase&df=text&q.OP=AND&q="term1 (term2 OR \"multiword phrase term\")"~3

This would hopefully match phrases like
- term1 and term2
- term1 and also term2
- term1 with multiword phrase term

This query structure is especially useful when the set of terms in the parentheses is very long, making query expansion difficult.

Testing this query in both 7.6.0 and 8.1, the following exception is thrown:

I know that this is thrown only when the nested terms have quotes. Is there a better way to execute a query like this?
