I've heard from a number of sources that the web services in SharePoint 2013 are adequate for crawling, but since the default authorization model is claim-space, we really need to get that going first.  But there's hope that once claim-space is resolved, this ticket will essentially require only minor UI changes.

If there is a user out there who wants to use SharePoint 2013 with claim space, please let us know - otherwise this ticket is in danger of being postponed out of 1.5.
