table formatting

Greetings,
With FOP it seems that you have to know the maximum number of columns you
will need and the width each column must be ahead of time. Given the
incoming xml table structure, it seems you could use XSLT to determine these
things at run time to generate the table formatting. Has anyone done this?
or are the capabilities of FOP tables better than I stated?
