I have the same issue... installed 0.9.10 on Ubuntu 14 inside a VirtualBox image.
I run Tomcat7 locally... when I created dockerfiles I noticed that these use tomcat8... but tomcat8 would crash on login attempt :( - so I went away from docker and started guacd locally and installed tomcat7 + guacamole client as described. Web app is up and running. RDP connection I use is copied form an existing 0.9.9 instance I use, wo I am 100% sure the user credentials etc are correct.
log just says this:

Any help appreciated... can I get guacd to log more?
