Web site observation #3 batik viewer vs browser?
Hello Batik Community,
In a section of the new release of Batik (1.0 beta2) was this:
>>We are also working on an updated version of our Web site which will
>>become
>>the 'official' Batik web site when 1.0 is released. That updated version
>>of
>>the web site is at:
>>
>>http://xml.apache.org/batik/batik-1.0Staging/
>>
>>This is a work in progress, and some documents are missing, but it shows
>>what we have in mind for the site. Suggestions or comments are welcome!
I have be looking at the site. It is really going to be great...but
I would like to note some things that might help individuals that
are new to Batik and help make the site more user friendly.
Any comments or additions more than welcome
(note) JMO (just my opinion and first observations)
some the observations hold more weight then others
I will try to keep this keep observations
to addess single issue at a time.
>+*****************************+
>observations #3 batik viewer?
>+*****************************+
I have a question:
I know that Batik project changed the name of the SVG viewer to SVG browser.
The question I have in the new web site, SVG viewer and SVG Browser are
refered to as Two seperate things....are they?
If SVG viewer and SVG browser are two separate things, then my observation
would seem to be valid.
On this page:
http://xml.apache.org/batik/batik-1.0Staging/
The second section is titled
"Applications of Batik"
it reads ( notice the use of "viewer" in this section ---I believe it should
be browser)
<snip>
With Batik, you can manipulate SVG documents anywhere Java is available. You
can also use the various Batik modules to generate, manipulate, transcode
and search SVG images in your applications.
Batik makes it easy for Java based applications to deal with SVG contents.
For example, using Batik's SVG generator, a Java application can very easily
export its graphics in the SVG format. Using Batik's SVG processor and
viewer, an application can very easily integrate SVG viewing capabilities.
Another possibility is to use Batik's modules to convert SVG to various
formats, such as raster images (JPEG or PNG).
Batik provides core components for handling and processing SVG files.
</snip>
If someone could let me know about the uses of viewer vs browser? I found
serveral incidents of this problem though out the batik site. I think it is
just legacy information...

The image we save out of the browser is saved at screen
resolution. The image we send to the printer from the browser is at
printer resolution (actually in many cases we may send the real path
data to the printer). Currently the browser doesn't allow you to
specify the size of the image to save (it always saves what you see in
the browser window).

This has nothing to do with the lossy JPEG compression it is
simply the size of the image you are saving to disk (not enough
pixels).

If you need to specify the size of the image to save, you should
probably use the rasterizer in the Batik distribution.

This is due to the limited resolution.

Yes, because the JPEG is at screen resolution while the print uses
the printer's resolution.

The quality changes the compression, not the resolution.

Have you tried what I suggested in an earlier email: increasing
the size of the image when using the rasterizer?
I think this should take care of your problem.
Cheers.

Re: Problems with Image file

Vincet,
I have problem like when I print the image file from
the SVG browser, it gives the good quality of print.
But when I save this SVG as JPG file and print the
image, quality of the print is not good. And also the
JPG image is not sharp.
I even changed the image quality factor to .9F which
is supposed to be the best without compression.
Please suggest me some idea about the sharpness
(quality) improvement of the image (JPG for print).
The text in small fonts appears like little scattered
on the boundaries.
Thanks in Advance.

Re: Problems with Image file

Bahadur,
The ImageTranscoder (and the rasterizer app), have hints that let you
change the size of the image. Typically, when going from on screen
display to high-res print, you will want to get about 3 times as
much resolution (this is a rule of thumb, not a scientific rule. It
depends on the printer). So you can rasterize your image at a bigger
size so that you can get a print size identical to that on your screen
but with a higher quality.
Another solution, depending on what you are doing, is to use the
print transcoder which will do "the right thing" for the print
resolution.
Good luck with your project.
Cheers.

Problems with Image file
Posted by Bahadur Singh Bhatia <ba...@yahoo.com>.
Hello Batik Users,
I am using batik project for converting the SVG file
to the image file in JPG format.
But when I print this image file, the font/resolution
is not as good as it appears in the svg browser.
Please suggest some remedy to overcome this prob.
Thanks in Advance.
Regards
Bahadur Singh
