How best to install subversion
Hi, where I work have gotten to the point where we are going to upgrade subversion to the latest version. That decision has been made we are on 1.4.2 (i think) and want some of the new features.
The problem I have is deciding how best to do it? Before where I work now I built the machine virtually from scratch and install subversion and its dependancies from source. What this enabled me to do was install subversion to a /usr/local/subversion-x.y.z then symlink to that to create just a 'subversion' and then symlink the binaries from /usr/bin to /usr/local/subverison/bin. The reason i liked this was that i could run the new one along side the old for a few days - run some tests and then finally switch over the symlinks.
Whiz forward to today. Where i work currently was installed almost exclusively using rpm's. Which are handy for speed - but i like to have an appreciation for what/where things are happening which i feel RPM's dont give. So the question is how best to proceed? We have subversion installed currently from rpms. Can i install the latest rpm but the way i outlined above? should I install from source to get this? is my model outdated? or just plain rubbish?
Any help gratefully received!

Why not get straight and backup your running installation, install new, if it
not work - roll back?
RPM is not just for speed, it also ensure you do not have broken dependency or
something that is not easily observable. It keep things straight forward.

I'm curious, what's your plan if your server dies? I'm thinking about
hard drive failures, power surges, etc.
Speaking generally, if you don't have a way of backing up and restoring
your server, you're setting yourself up for hair loss.

It is recommended way of things. Unless you have second server PC to set up as
a replacement.

Much like running two webservers in parallel - it raises so much of
uncertainty, i can't really recommend taking such a way.

It is the worst case scenario - in case the uninstall of the new RPM and
reinstall of the older package went wrong and things not working properly
still.

Sorry, but what do you plan to do if your system will be gone away for real?
Do you have *any* backups of it yet?

Although backing up and restoring a system is *possible* i would hardly say it was *easy* to implement - especially when you consider that the server is locked away about 3 floors down with no physical access.
