I though you could ask suck question. No, THIS is not possible.

Ahh but what if I wanted to check out two different files from two different
repository locations into the same directory...
(yes yes we all know about file externals)
So I would not even pretend that your solution is checking out only one file
;-)

That's what I mean "meaningfully possible" :)
We can discuss the actual results, but for user, it will look like it's only
one file checked out. Subversion need to know the file path in repository,
and due to the WC organization, you need at least one level of subdirectory to
store technical data. (clean copies etc.)

It's meningfully possible, although it's not an one easy operation.
Check out empty directoy, then update only that file you want.

The bugs are not marked as resolved, so I don't believe these problems
are fixed.
> Is Single File Checkout possible in subversion ?
No, the smallest unit you can check out is a directory. You can get
the contents of a single file using "svn cat" but that will not be a
working copy that you can modify.
You can check out a working copy that is sparse, and then pull in only
the files you want to work on. There is a section on sparse checkouts
in the book.

Does the status indicate that they're being worked on or fixed?

That question is separate from the above issues which deal with
file-level externals.
No, single file checkout is not possible with the current design of Subversion.
