[I] Upload to App Store failing after update to to version 8.0.0 [cordova-ios]

seamlink-aalves opened a new issue, #1590:
URL: https://github.com/apache/cordova-ios/issues/1590

   # Bug Report

   ## Problem
   App with special characters in name gives an error when submiting to the App Store after updating to cordova ios 8.

   The same App with name without special charaters is able to be sbmited with no errors.

   ### What is expected to happen?
   I should be able to publish with no errors

   ### What does actually happen?
   I'm able to archive the app correctly but when publishing to the App store I get error:
   ```
   Validation failed (409)
   Missing or invalid signature. The bundle '......' at bundle path 'Payload/<name with special characters>.app' is not signed using an Apple submission certificate.
   ```

   ## Information
   I control the App name by changing the `CFBundleDisplayName` in info.plist with:
   ```
   <config-file target="*-Info.plist" parent="CFBundleDisplayName">
               <string>My App</string>
   </config-file>
   ```
   The `name` node in `config.xml` falls back to a safe name. In previous `cordova-ios` version this worked fine. In the new version the App get's the name which is set in `name` node of config.xml.

   Due to this, I now have set the `name` to the name with special characters and stopped editing the `CFBundleDisplayName` but the upload fails with the error above.

   ### Command or Code

   ### Environment, Platform, Device
   MacOS Latest

   ### Version information
   cordova ios 8
   XCode 26

   ## Checklist

   - [x] I searched for existing GitHub issues
   - [x] I updated all Cordova tooling to most recent version
   - [x] I included all the necessary information above

   After further investigation I was able to upload the App to the App Store with the following steps:

   - The App is created by Cordova with Display Name, Bundle Display Name and Product Name with the name set in config.xml (all with the same value with special chatacters)
   - I openned the App in XCode and in Build Settings edited Product Name to "App"
   - This automatically changed Bundle Display Name to the same value as Product Name
   - I then changed Bundle Display Name to the Display Name (with special charecters) which did not change Product Name

   With this changes I was able to upload sucessfully to the App Store.

   It seems to me that having Product Name as "App" as no impacting on the naming shown in the App store and on the device and should solve this issue.

   Can someone else confirm this?

   I think I did not make myself clear. If the `name` element has special characters it will not fail to build but it will fail when uploaded to the app store with the error mencioned in the initial report.

   I was only able to upload it if I use the `short` property for the name with special characters while keeping the `name` element without special characters.

   This is easely reproduceble if you try using characters like Γ‘ Γ  Γ© Γ§ in the `name`.

   I finally managed to find a workarround after checking PR #1485 . I used the shortName property to set the naming with special charaters because the algorithm checks if the short name is different from the name and uses it in that case.

   However, I think this should be looked at, because the name should not break the upload process to the App Store.

   The file name of the project and resulting binary have no relation to the displayed app name in the App Store or when installed on devices. In cordova-ios 8, the project name was made "App" consistently, specifically to resolve issues relating to project names with Unicode characters that were causing problems for CocoaPods, plugins, and build tools.

   For setting the application name and on-device display name, that should be entirely possible through the config.xml [`<name>`](https://cordova.apache.org/docs/en/latest/config_ref/index.html#name) element. You should not need to do any manual config editing or hook-based modifications of the Info.plist file.

   @deguchi Thanks for the detailed investigation! 2 thoughts:

   1. Would you be able to compare the results from Cordova iOS 7.1.1 and figure out what's different between the two versions in terms of the app resource signing? This worked in 7.1.1 as far as I've been able to tell.

   2. With Cordova iOS 8.x, does overriding the `EXECUTABLE_NAME` setting to something like "App" solve the problem (since there are no longer non-ASCII characters in play)? This would need to be done in the Xcode project file, but then you should be able to run a Cordova compile command from the CLI.

   If the second option works with `EXECUTABLE_NAME`, we can get that fixed for the next Cordova iOS version.

   @seamlink-aalves Thanks for testing!

   Your workaround with the display name is absolutely fine, I'm just trying to figure out what the root issue is here because this used to work properly in cordova-ios 7.x when the whole project used the name configured in `config.xml` πŸ˜•

Re: [I] Upload to App Store failing after update to to version 8.0.0 [cordova-ios]

Posted by "deguchi (via GitHub)" <gi...@apache.org>.
deguchi commented on issue #1590:

   Environment: cordova-ios 8.1.1, Xcode 26.6 (17F113), macOS 26.5.2 (Apple Silicon). Our `<name>` in `config.xml` is `γ•γ°γ¨γƒžγƒƒγƒ—` and has not changed since 2018.

   ### The error is about resource sealing, not certificates

   This is the exact text Xcode 26.6's Organizer returns:

   ```
   Missing or invalid signature. The bundle 'jp.calil.sabatomap' at bundle path
   'Payload/γ•γ°γ¨γƒžγƒƒγƒ—.app' is not signed using an Apple submission certificate.
   code = 90034
   ```

   **The "submission certificate" wording is actively misleading.** I spent half a day chasing certificates and provisioning profiles; all of it was fine from the start. The app is signed by an `Apple Distribution` certificate, Apple's own OCSP responder reports it as `good`, `get-task-allow` is `false`, the embedded profile is the App Store one, and the chain has no expired links.

   What is actually broken is this:

   ```
   $ codesign --verify --deep --strict "γ•γ°γ¨γƒžγƒƒγƒ—.app"
   γ•γ°γ¨γƒžγƒƒγƒ—.app: a sealed resource is missing or invalid
   ```

   Reading `_CodeSignature/CodeResources` shows why. **The main executable is sealed as an ordinary resource:**

   ```
   files2: 'γ•γ°γ¨γƒžγƒƒγƒ—' β†’ hash2 does not match the file on disk
   ```

   `codesign` fails to recognize the double-byte-named executable as the bundle's main executable, so it seals its hash as a regular resource. The signature is then embedded into that same binary, its bytes change, and the sealed hash can never match. This is not an artifact of unzipping the IPA β€” the app inside the `.xcarchive`, which never went through a zip, fails the same way.

   Renaming is enough to make the causation unambiguous. Same archive, same certificate, only the name differs:

   | Bundle name (with `CFBundleExecutable` changed to match) | `codesign --verify --deep --strict` |
   |---|---|
   | `γ•γ°γ¨γƒžγƒƒγƒ—.app` | a sealed resource is missing or invalid |
   | `Sabatomap.app` | valid on disk / satisfies its Designated Requirement |

   Worth noting: Xcode's own distribution logs mix both normalizations for this bundle β€” `\U3055\U306f\U3099...` (NFD) in some places and `\U3055\U3070...` (NFC) in others. Normalizing `PRODUCT_NAME` to one form does not appear to be sufficient.

   ### Workaround, and the side effect it has on Android

   Put an ASCII string in `<name>` and move the real name into the `short` attribute. cordova-ios maps `<name>` to `PRODUCT_NAME` and `short` to `CFBundleDisplayName`, so only the executable name becomes ASCII while the home screen still shows the Japanese name:

   ```xml
   <name short="γ•γ°γ¨γƒžγƒƒγƒ—">Sabatomap</name>
   ```

   `CFBundleIdentifier` is untouched, so this is still an update to the existing app. `codesign --verify --deep --strict` passes and the upload goes through.

   **This workaround breaks the Android name, though.** cordova-android puts `<name>` into `app_name` and `short` into `launcher_name`, and `AndroidManifest.xml` points `application` at `app_name` β€” so the app list in Settings ends up showing the ASCII name. It can be corrected from the same `config.xml`:

   ```xml
   <platform name="android">
       <edit-config file="AndroidManifest.xml" target="/manifest/application" mode="merge">
           <application android:label="@string/launcher_name" />
       </edit-config>
   </platform>
   ```

   `activity` and `intent-filter` already reference `launcher_name`, so this restores every label to the Japanese name. Verified with `aapt2 dump badging`: `application-label: 'γ•γ°γ¨γƒžγƒƒγƒ—'`.

   ### Request

   Japanese, Chinese and Korean app names are not unusual, so **I would like the default behaviour to just work.** As it stands, a developer has to invert the meaning of `<name>` and `short` to get iOS signing to pass, and then patch Android back with `edit-config`. That is a lot of knowledge to demand for an entirely ordinary requirement. `PRODUCT_NAME` is never visible to users, so pinning it to a sanitized ASCII value costs nothing.

   If the plan is instead to wait for `codesign` to change, **a warning from `cordova build ios` when `<name>` contains non-ASCII characters would already help a great deal.** Both the build and the archive succeed today, so CI cannot catch this β€” you only find out when App Store Connect rejects the upload.

   Hi @dpogue, I've tested today with cordova-ios 8.0.1 without my workarround and got the same error.

   If I have in config.xml the following it will fail:
   `<name>testΓ‘</name>`

   With my workarround it works:
   `<name short="testΓ‘">testa</name>`

   @dpogue can you tell me why we need to set the product Name with the name configured in `config.xml`?

   In my testing if I keep to Product name with "App" and have the Display name with what is set in config.xml I was able to publish the App to the store and saw no impact on the naming of the App in the device and the store
