[Discuss] Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Flex 4.8.0

Hi,

Well looks like we have a release. 72 hours have passed (unless I've stuffed up my time zone calculations) and we have +3 votes and no negative votes.

Although strictly Jeff vote may not count as he didn't download and test as per the guidelines. I'm not sure on that. Given that the vote was over a weekend and there been little feedback (I'm assuming people need more time to test perhaps) should we wait for more votes/feedback before calling it an official release? Any advice from the mentors on this?

Thanks,
Justin

I'm hoping to get time tomorrow or thursday to test and vote. With the
voting starting during Google IO and the craziness of coming back to work
after being gone for a week I wasn't able to test earlier.

That's not quite right. These (textLayout and osmf) both have
"reciprocal" licenses. They are not optional components but you have to
acknowledge the license before the libraries can be downloaded.

Hi,

BTW by "optional" as they have licenses that are not compatible with Apache Flex but are required to compile the SDK.

Thanks,

I am assuming it's related to the FlexSDK.
In older versions of the Flex SDK I had to resolve quite a lot of issues with ASDoc, but managed to tweak my source files to work with those versions of ASDoc by replacing XML Entities in the comments by alternatives. Strangely the thing that messed up older the newer Adobe ASDoc versions were "@" signs. If a package level comment contained the email-address of the creator, completely messed up XML was a result.

I got the build to work with 4.6.0 so the issues that are happening now are probably a regression of ASDoc in 4.8.0

Is the ASDocs issue related to 4.8 Apache Flex or Flexmojos?

Ok ... I found out why the asdoc is generated for one of the modules. It's the only module that has is fixed to an older flex version so the asdoc of that is used.

I guess there are some issues with the ASdoc of Flexmojos 4.8.0. I think it would be good to have a look at that.

Ok ... after manually adding references to osmf and textlayout the suite runs quite well.

Only 6 Tests of 141 are failling that didn't fail with 4.6.0

Two of these are related tot he SWZ files not existing Four of them complain about ASDoc files not being generated.

Strangely enough all asdoc content seems to be empty. One or two times a 0-byte index.html is generated. Allways a "tempdita" directory, which contains a "packages.dita" file.
What is even stranger, is that one of the projects in the testsuite seem to generate the ASdoc correctly. I'll dig into what's different with that one.

So all in all it looks pretty good ... I'll dig into the ASDoc problem later on this day.

Looks like you're missing textLayout.swc (and perhaps osmf.swc) in the frameworks/libs directory. Did you run the ant script and/or downloaded the optional components?

Hi Mike,

Most problems were related to me having overseen the "external" directory in the compiler when generating my fdks, the others were mostly Flexmojos running Air tests in the Flashplayer due to some "is this an air project" function returning false because I changed the structure of the fdks. I did have some locale-chain problems in RC2 but they were magically fixed when I tried it with RC3 ;-)

in the meanwhile I managed to sort out all the Problems ... therefore I am willing to say that Flexmojos6.x is 4.8 compatable :-)

Ok ... so now I evaluated all of the failures:

In total there are 141 tests.

2 Failled because there are no swz files ... this was to be expected.
77 Failled because of missing Interface ISWFContext

If someone has an Idea what this could be related to ... I would be really happy :-)
I think this might be one place I have to fix something and then hopefully the results will be more usable.

When looking at the tests again and the reported errors, It seems not to be related to the usit-testing, as I first assumed, as the build fails in the compile-swf phase.
I think it would be best to post the entire configuration dump, so mabe one of you guys here can see what's going on. So I attached the reported error, the content of the Application being compiled , the Flexmojos configuration summary and the generated compiler-configuration. ( I would have attached it as file, but I remember these being dropped all the time )

The error being reported is:

[ERROR] _main_mx_managers_SystemManager.as:[25,36] Interface ISWFContext was not found. implements IFlexModuleFactory, ISWFContext

The Project being compiled only contains one MXML: main.mxml

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute">
        <mx:Label text="Hello World" />
</mx:Application>

The compiler configuration being used is this:

Ok ... so now I have some results.

First I had to make Flexmojos build with 4.6.0.23201 as this Suite ran with only minor errors (3 failures of 141 Tests), I configured FM to build with the 4.8.0.1355137. I was expecting trouble with tests that made use of swz files, as these are no longer part oft he SDK. However more than 50% of the test currently fail.

This is the most common error:
[ERROR] _TestRunner_mx_managers_SystemManager.as:[25,36] Interface ISWFContext was not found. implements IFlexModuleFactory, ISWFContext

Actually there are so many failures that I haven't found one yet that doesn't fail because of this.
The reason for this is that the the testrunner somehow references a class in textLayout, which is no longer part of the SDK. I will investigate this and post what I find after that is resolved.

The other tests, that don't make use of flexunit seem to run though (Well I haven't found one failling test that doesn't use flexunit) ... so I guess this is some good news.

thanks for the explanation - IMO such files could be distributed as convenience binaries, outside of the release.

My question about trusting that file amounts to "how can people check that an fla file does not contain harmful content" - that's the whole point about source vs. binary releases. If there's a reasonable way to validate that particular fla, and it's only optional and not required to use Apache Flex anyway, it can probably stay in the release IMO, but Incubator PMC members might think differently.

Several Apache documents state that there are binary distributions provided
as a convenience. Do they go through a different process?

A FLA file is a source project for Flash Professional. If you are a user of
Flash Professional and want to use it to create components for Flex, you can
start with some plug-ins that involve this file. In general, how does a
project that allows for integration from other paid-for proprietary projects
provide sample projects or other integration files?

The person who will sign for Adobe is ready to sign, but because Adobe is
off this week, it isn't clear that I will get the signed document this week.

We will make the other adjustments and produce another candidate.

I didn't think one was needed because having native line endings in the
ASDoc html pages didn't seem important and there would be one less package
to generate. For the source code, native line endings matter, hence two
src packages. We can generate a tar.gz file next, or this time, if we
rekit again, if you think we should.

I'm self-beating me to it, found time to do that now.

Thanks to Carol for putting the release together, it looks mostly
good, even though a few things that should be easy to fix stand in the
way.

I have ignored the -incubating-bin.tar.gz file, we don't release
binaries, so -1 on that one.

The -src archive looks good, with two open questions which lead me to
a -1 for now:

1) The -src archive does contain a few binary files: an flv, an mp3
and a ttf which should be harmless. But how about
./frameworks/projects/flash-integration/FLA/ContentHolder.fla? How can
people check that file in order to trust it? Remember that I'm
clueless about Flash and Flex in general, I'm only here as an
incubation mentor...the answer might be trivial.

2) Do we have confirmation that the Flex trademark agreement between
Adobe and the ASF was signed? I don't think so, and we cannot release
without it, as mentioned by Alex in this thread. But let's get the
release archives ready, assuming that comes soon.

As for the -asdocs archive, LICENCE, NOTICE and DISCLAIMER are
missing, so -1 as well.

See comments below for the details of what I checked and a few things
that need to be fixed but wouldn't warrant a -1.

Release check details:

About apache-flex-sdk-4.8.0-incubating-src:
MD5 (apache-flex-sdk-4.8.0-incubating-src.tar.gz) =
87121e49a13cab50ec9bee9732f05bc5

Signatures and digests match the
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/flex/trunk/KEYS (but it
would be good for release managers to get their keys signed by other
Apache folk at the next opportunity).

The KEYS file shouldn't be included in the distribution archives (as
people must get it from a separate trusted source), please fix for the
next release.

Contents of the zip and tar.gz files are identical (with an extra
apache-flex-sdk-4.8.0-incubating-src path in the tar.gz file, not a
problem).

DISCLAIMER is present.

LICENCE is present but the "For the asc compiler in modules/asc..."
bit is already in the NOTICE file, can be removed from LICENSE, please
fix for the next release.

NOTICE looks ok.

The rat exclusions in build.xml look ok, I understand a rat report
that looks good is attached to issues.apache.org but that's down now,
cannot check it.

I haven't tried building, as an incubation mentor I don't care about
the technical quality of the release, I'll trust Flex PPMC members to
check that.

One open question about an fla file, see above.

About apache-flex-sdk-4.8.0-incubating-asdocs:
MD5 (apache-flex-sdk-4.8.0-incubating-asdocs.zip) =
64cb005fc77de96005711841571647b2

Why no .tar.gz file? (doesn't affect my vote, but inconsistent).

Signatures and digests match.

LICENCE, NOTICE and DISCLAIMER are missing.

Files like /asdoc/spark/components/ActionBar.html include an Air icon
IIUC, I think there should be a notice somewhere in those pages that
Air is a trademark of Adobe (and maybe Flash and other trademarks that
might be mentioned).

Note that 72 hours for a vote is a minimum, extending is not a problem.

I'm expecting to be able to review the release on Thursday unless
other mentors beat me to it.

Off the top of my head there a build option to build for the list of common locales not just a single one - you may need to do that to get the missing dirs?

It's probably only building en_US locale by default. Does copy locale work with en_US?

-1 as of now. /bin/copylocale was throwing errors for me. A few of the
spark packages are missing locale folders. Flex 4.6 has those folders.

I will send a more detailed error message stack in a few hours.

Hi,

None they should be specific to Apache Flex build scripts.

Other than using the SDK in an IDE and try to compile an existing project with it?

The framworks/libs directior should contain several swcs including framework.swc, core.swc, charts.swc, spac.swc, advancegrids.swc and you should also have mobile/mobilecomponents.swc and mx/mx.swc.

Hope that helps,
Justin

Hey Justin

Not that I ever remember setting up, and this is a fairly new machine. I used the .properties file as I wasn't sure how to set up environment variables TBH. Could installing Adobe products have set up those environment variables?

Is there any other way I can verify the build was successful?

Do you have to have any of the environment variables set? (Perhaps from a previous build.)

I'm so naff at this kind of stuff, so might require a bit of hand holding ;)

Once thing I found confusing was that in README it states

"On the Mac, set ADOBE_EXTENSION_MANAGER to the absolute path of "Adobe Extension Manager CS5.app"

yet in env-template.properties it states

0n Mac, if installed to the default location, the setting would be
# env.ADOBE_EXTENSION_MANAGER=/Applications/Adobe Extension Manager CS5/Adobe Extension Manager CS5.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe Extension Manager CS5

I presume it's the later, as I just got a successful build using that path.

I also forgot to rename 'env-template.properties' to 'env.properties', but still got a successful build? After renaming it skips all the downloads and also tells me that the build was successful.

Given that you have to put a some effort into making it work with an IDE it's probably not that unexpected. Someone not used to ant (and setting that up on windows which could be a large number of users) it would take some effort to try it out.

I had expected more feedback from the people on the existing committer list however.

Thanks,
Justin

I'm surprised and concerned, but really, I'd rather wait and not count the
48 hours of weekend time in the 72 hours.

We are still waiting on the trademark donation document so we can't truly
release yet.

Let's hope more folks find time to beat this thing up a bit. I'm pretty
sure the code paths are the same, but it is things like copylocales or IOS
deployment that are more likely to have mistakes because we had to change
where the pieces are coming from.

No other mentors have voted. I think I may have found an issue, but I'm
trying to confirm if was behaving the same way in 4.6.0 or if it is
something I screwed up along the way (this has to do with deploying it on
iOS with AIR 3.3).

I'm actually surprised we haven't had more feedback...

All community members are welcome to express their opinion - even if
your vote isn't officially counted it can be helpful. A vote on a
release that indicates why you approve it, for example, can help
others make up their mind about a release.

Hi,

> I know I'm not someone who can vote at all
I believe (please someone correct me here if I'm wrong) it's fine for you (and any non committer) to vote it's just that your vote is not binding. Your vote may influence a committers vote who's vote is binding and also voting may help become a committer. If the binding votes are not in line with the user votes then we are doing something wrong.

Once you have some result post them to list I'm sure there are people here who would be interested.

Thanks,
Justin

I know I'm not someone who can vote at all, but I'm currently intensely working on getting the flexmojos testsuite to fly with 4.8.0. This will test quite a lot of different features of the sdk ... think this might be valuable input to you.

Unfortunately the structural changes I had to introduce, made it neccesary to fix quite a lot of stuff in flexmojos. I am confident however that I will have some results in the next 2-3 days.

If there have only been three +1 votes including Jeff's I think we need to wait a bit longer. That's not very many considering the size of the PPMC. I've said I'd like to check the build myself. Have any other mentors voted?

Just to clarify, note that the PPMC votes are only a first step for a
podling, the actual release cannot happen until the Incubator PMC has
the chance to vote as well [1]. Please don't push any release out
until that has happened.
