[Bug 123154] New: Xlsx text is erroneously replicated multiple times
within a single cell
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=123154
Bug ID: 123154
Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Xlsx text is erroneously replicated multiple times
within a single cell
Product: Calc
Version: 4.0.0
Hardware: PC
OS: Windows XP
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P3
Component: open-import
Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
Reporter: r.gildea@verizon.net
CC: issues@openoffice.apache.org

his bug appears to be a more severe and widespread manifestation of bug 119916,
which is, as of this bug report, open on OO3.4. No instability appears to be
created in either the app or OS.
Multiple extraneous copies of the text in 3 of the 18 occupied cells of the
attached single-column Excel spreadsheet are displayed by Open Office Calc
4.0.0 (Apache Open Office Version 4.0.0 Milestone A00400m3 Build ID 9702 SVN
r1503704) but none of these errors are displayed by either 3.3.0 or Excel. In
each problematic cell, extra copies appear appended to the correct text in the
font of the “square root” symbol that ends the correct text. However, that
trailing symbol also appears in the correctly displayed cell of row 18. This
4.0.0 problem was first observed in a much larger xlsx. It it, most but not
all cells with the red trailing “square root” symbol exhibit the problem. In
that xlsx, the problem -- always manifest in a single cell -- typically
involves many more replications than just one: even 30 replications or more.
In an attempt to attach a minimal example of the problem, I found that the
problem does not persist in very small excerpts of the original xlsx.
Conversely, after I deleted rows and columns of the source xlsx to create the
attached xlsx, the formerly correctly displayed cell in row 14 now ironically
also exhibits the problem. In general, the appearance of the problem in a
given cell seems dependent on other cells not necessarily adjacent.
In the original xlsx the red “square root” symbol is not the only apparent
trigger of replicated text. Sometimes (but not in the attached xlsx) a cell
with a hypertext link (and blue on gray colors) exhibits the problem. The only
other, similarly occasional, trigger of the problem is apparently the presence,
in the affected cell, of at least some text with an orange color. Almost every
cell with replication has at least some colored text. The converse is not
true, and in the original xlsx there is at least one cell with replication but
only black text.

I see the same problem on Apache OO 4.1.1 on RHEL 6.5.
