"Samza Standalone" is a very broad term and can be interpreted in many ways. For example, we could essentially run a job with ProcessJobFactory and claim that Samza runs in "standalone mode", even though it is nothing more than a sandbox environment. 
This JIRA defines what we mean by Samza standalone and tracks each of the goals and associated subtasks.
