Configuration Admin Service and Metatype Service

Hi all,

I implemented the Configuration Admin Service and the Metatype Service
specifications and decided to contribute both to the Apache Felix project. I
attached the implementations to the respective Jira issues.

As we will make use of these service in our ongoing project(s), I am also
committed to keep working on these contributions should issues arise with
the correctness of implementation or other errors.

Finally, I am currently working on a patch to the existing Declarative
Services implemtation (org.apache.felix.scr) to provide contiguration data
to registered components, which of course I will also contribute :-)

Regards
Felix

Yes, definitely good news! Thanks.

HI,

I was just informed, that the grant is on file now at the secretary of the
ASF. So the legal barriers have finally been taken down :-)

Hi,

In fact Roy also recommended sending in the grant in light that Felix is
currently trying to mature out of the Incubator. I talked to David and we
will prepare and send in the grant.

I would suggest to start voting on these contributions.

Thanks and Regards

Just saw this. I agree with Niclas but I also think Roy would probably ask
that a Software Grant be mailed in for this contribution anyway. The ICLA
and CCLAs if already on file are already taken care of.

It is safe to assume that what Roy says goes. After all, he was the driving
force for the entire legal framework at ASF.

Hi Niclas,

So, I think if you just have David validate to the Felix community with an
> ACK
> that this is Ok, I think we are more than covered... (Or is Day different
> from day.com??)

David is my boss and Day is day.com is Day Management AG (as it is
officially called over here in Switzerland).

I will care for this ACK.

Re Software Grant: If the ACK would suffice it, we can probably leave it at
that. On the other hand we (Day) already has one the IP stuff for a
contribution to Jackrabbit, so we could also take that way. I am currently
discussing this with David (and Roy).

Regards.

To satisfy the legalities, this is exactly what some mean are needed.
Provide the contribution "somewhere", the community look at it, and the PPMC
(maybe even Felix PMC by the time we get that far :o) ) need to approve to
accept the contribution, typically by a vote. During the same time the
software grant should be submitted.

NOW, that said; Roy Fielding claims otherwise, and there is currently a debate
between the big guns, such as Roy and Jim the secretary, whether or not this
is at all necessary. Roy's position is that the CLAs cover such contributions
already, and in fact Day is the 'use case' in that debate. I tend to agree
with Roy, the barrier seems unnecessary.

Roy's main argument goes;
<quote>
The CCLA says:

    8. It is your responsibility to notify the Foundation when any
change is required to the list of designated employees authorized
to submit Contributions on behalf of the Corporation, or to the
Corporation's Point of Contact with the Foundation.

The software grant is a simple non-exclusive license according
to the same terms agreed to in the CCLA.  There is, in fact, no
need for any software grant at this point because we have already
agreed that all of Day's employee contributions (even the people
who we haven't listed yet) are covered by the CCLA.  If David
writes to you and says "this contribution is covered by the
terms of the existing CCLA", then that is a legally binding
statement and every bit as enforceable as a new document.
</qoute>

So, I think if you just have David validate to the Felix community with an ACK
that this is Ok, I think we are more than covered... (Or is Day different
from day.com??)

Cheers
Niclas

Yep we need a software grant for it. It's easy just download and print out
the grant document and fax it to the asf's fax number.

Here's the grant doc:

If you are willing to send in a grant, then I would say to just do it to
cover our bases. We can't get in trouble for having too much
documentation. Then once people have a chance to look, we can vote on
accepting the contribution.

Hi all,

This is probably time for a guy to jump in who knows the legalities better
than I do :-)

Fact is, that I did develop this code outside of Apache in terms of "not
stored in an Apache SVN repository and not discussed on any list until now".
Yet, the two bundles have been developed with the goal to contribute them to
the Felix project when done.

Of course, I would provide any information (electronically or by paper of
fax), which would be required to fullfill any such requirements.

Felix

I guess the issue is for a grant then. Was this work developed outside
of Apache? If so, that means it would need a grant, would it not? Or is
the fact that you are a committer already override this requirement?

As I am a committer to Jackrabbit, my CLA as well as the Corporate CLA of my
employer (Day Management AG) should be on file. If there are more
requirements, please let me know.

Very nice! I updated the table at:

http://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/FELIX/Felix+R4+contributions

In the past we've voted to accept such major contributions. Also, the
JIRA "grant checkbox" won't be enough. We'll need paperwork:
