I ran into this problem recently as well. I am experiencing this issue on a Solaris machine as well as on an Ubuntu box. 
I am using Java 1.6 on both machines and it only happens with certain Arial Fonts e.g.: 

JFIGPU+Arial-BoldMT
KLSYIK+ArialMT

Normal Arial works just fine though and it appears to be rendered correctly.
