[PR] Spark 4 client support [polaris]

MonkeyCanCode opened a new pull request, #4612:
URL: https://github.com/apache/polaris/pull/4612

   <!--
   ๐Ÿ“ Describe what changes you're proposing, especially breaking or user-facing changes.
   ๐Ÿ“– See https://github.com/apache/polaris/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md for more.
   -->

   This PR added spark 4 support for polaris spark client (this was previously worked on by @adam-christian-software via https://github.com/apache/polaris/pull/3188), this also fix issue https://github.com/apache/polaris/issues/3021. Beside the spark 4 support, this PR also fixes couple nits while I was working on this change such as:
   1. wrong reference path to README.md
   2. typo in various files
   3. Minor wording changes on `plugins/spark/README.md` to make it more generic to support both spark v3.5 and v4.0

   *This is rework for https://github.com/apache/polaris/pull/4535 where my accidentally messed up my branch*

   I haven't looked at the details yet, but it appears that the integration-test and regtest issues are addressed - thanks for that!

   About merging PRs, I think we should either wait for a consensus on [this mailing-list discussion](https://lists.apache.org/thread/92x2yz3ckjx31kfz77js90wyhsoxxq86) or use "Squash and merge".

   Spark 3: PolarisCatalogSpark3Utils extends PolarisCatalogUtils
   Spark 4: PolarisCatalogSpark4Utils extends PolarisCatalogUtils

   WDYT?

   @dimas-b @jbonofre @flyrain so the history are now preserved...the catch is someone with repo edit access must enable non-squash merge before we merge this. Otherwise, the history will be gone once we click "Squash and merge".

   Hello @snazy @dimas-b @flyrain @gh-yzou , mind kind if this what we want to do to avoid dup code? Also, it doesn't appear this repo merge without squash (setting on the repo). We will need to enable that to be able to preserve the commit histories for the spark v4.0.

   Also, I didn't create regtest in for spark v4.0 as those will be replace with the JUnit directly via https://github.com/apache/polaris/pull/4588

   I think git-based tools can figure line-by-line annotations across copy/move even if we do a squash merge... Please try it locally. I'm pretty sure it should be ok.

   So we did that already. With plain `cp src dest` in original PR, this will all show the works are done by me. This is requested via https://github.com/apache/polaris/pull/4535#issuecomment-4560086468 which iceberg team had to do the same as well.

   So all files (including the new base interface) should have previous history with this approach. This also means, the spark 4 files will have history even they are modification on top of spark 3.

Review Comment:
   Only the default changes in Spark 4.0 code ... Could it be safe to use the default with Spark 3.5 (and have 1:1 util code)?

Review Comment:
   Only this parameter is new in Spark 4.0... How about we keep most of the code in common (base class) and just have an overridable method for specializing `new CatalogTable(...)` in Spark 3 vs 4?

   My question is more about the plugins/spark/v4.0/spark/BUNDLE-LICENSE and plugins/spark/v4.0/spark/BUNDLE-NOTICE. I assume it may need certain due to transitive deps brought by Spark 4.0. Are they the same as 3.5 ones or this PR has made the change already?

Review Comment:
   All good @dimas-b. Yes, one extra column here. Same responded above. Any classes with diff, I currently have them not in the common due to using `sourceSets`.

Review Comment:
   So the files that are not in the common all have couple spots diff due to changes either in spark or delta or iceberg. As I am using `sourceSets`, we won't not be able to have two class with same names. We could do the adapters pattern as what @snazy suggested via https://github.com/apache/polaris/pull/4535#issuecomment-4563754649. But debating if this is worth it or if there is a better way to do so. Thoughts?

   Are these classes really "copied from Iceberg" anymore? My reading is that they are very different now ๐Ÿค”

   @jbonofre @snazy : WDYT?
