Install packages structure remark

Hi,
i'm jet by installing Subversion (client and server) on Windows and i must
notice that structure of the Download/Packages for Win32 need to be revised.

I must also install the server somwhere and i could not find any division
between server and client packages.
My problem is that i don't know what is what. When i download the package
"subversion-1.3.2.zip" or "svn-win32-1.3.2.zip" i couldn't find any info
where is the server software.
Now i think there is only client package for Win32, is it thrue?

I think, the packages should be strict divided. First into client/server
packages and than in operating systems for each.
I also think that the Subversion project also should maintain the packages
for all operating systems that it will support.

Thanks, and sorry for my bad englisch.
Kruno

The library dependencies of the client and server are so similar that
I suppose nobody has seen a purpose in separating them. All
Subversion distributions so far are both client and server together,
including the Windows distribution.

The Subversion team is as far as I know unable to support binary
builds, and the binary builds are therefore made available
exclusively by volunteers who are not necessarily otherwise involved
in the Subversion effort.

Hi Kruno,

I believe this has been covered before. The client and server modules for
Subversion are essentially the same. There is no need to create separate
packages for each.

Hi Kruno:

Having the server and client combined in one package means that you can use
the client on the same machine that runs your server. It's perhaps a small
thing, but it's convenient and useful to have client software installed on
the server. So it's sensible to combine the two.

Your first stop after reading this should be the Subversion book site:
http://svnbook.red-bean.com The book covers the various possible
installation methods. That information should help you choose which server
"installation" is the right fit for your needs.

Absolutely. Plan to read this once when you get started and a second time
after you've used Subversion for a while. Some of the topics make more
sense after you've worked with it for a while. You can purchase the book,
but you'll find that the downloadable version has many updates over what has
been printed.

I agree that I would like to see a larger variety of SVN binaries available.
We had to "roll our own" for AIX. The problem is that Subversion is an
open-source project. Binaries are built by volunteers and I don't think many
people have a spare UNIX server sitting in a closet at home.

Shaun is right on that point! Unfortunately, not everyone has a Windows
build environment either, even though they may have a Windows system at
hand.

Anyway, good luck with Subversion and post back if you have questions. Erik
