Currently DropDownChoice can be applied only on select tag. I would like to be able to have several optgroups inside a select (http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_optgroup.asp). A simplest way seems to add DropDownChoice component on a optgroup tag. Because of this limitation, I cannot do this. The only way, seems to be to create a brand new component.

no, it does not make sense to attach ddc to an optgroup tag because optgroup is not what is being submitted. for this usecase there are Select and Option components in extensions.
