The APACHE drill JDBC driver does not return any table metadata (getTables etc) for a dfs workspace. In order to allow a BI client to see metadata (getTables and getColumns) VIEWS have to be defined. Attempting to create a view with an explicit type cast (which Drill requires) will fail

create or replace view  TSINT as select cast(RNUM as int) RNUM ,  cast(CSINT as smallint) CSINT from dfs.cert_data.tsint

Error: UNSUPPORTED_OPERATION ERROR: SMALLINT is not supported
